My car had a very bad rat infestation and I believe they chewed this thing up pretty badly to the point where you can just push what's left of it back and forth.
If you were to take the front fender off, this would be attached to the body a few inches before the door. I'm not quite sure what its function is. Maybe in case of a collision?
I got a notification from the local yard that a new s197 hit Friday night; someone had taken the left fender and this was still on the body. Got it for two bucks. Maybe if I'm bored I'll take the fender off and slap it in. I'd have to be pretty damned bored.

Edit: someone in the s197 fb group said it's sound insulation which considering my exhaust I'm not too worried about.
