I know most guys are running either a trac lock or Torsion rear but has anyone tried a spool for road racing?

That would be a terrible idea. You'd be better off with an open diff. The diff needs to work and be unlocked through the turns.

Is that like, "it's so crazy it must work!"?

No I know the technical aspects behind it and how the diff works and needs to work but the reason I ask is I was talking to a guy last night that runs a Chatum chassis and he was saying he ran a spool. When I asked why he said he can get the power to the ground and both Tyres quicker and his crew guy said he runs the same make spool in his 240drift car (which I can see why).

Yea that's why I was asking to see if anyone has tried it in our cars on a road course. Drag racing I know they have and that works but road race is a different animal so I figured I would ask to see.

Is this thread serious?

Yea I was just asking. I can't see anyone running one in a mustang but I figured I would ask. Like the old saying goes "the only stupid question is the one that is not asked". Also don't count out the drift guys to fast. I went with some local guys 2 weeks ago for a ride along and the guy in the LS powered 240 has STUPID car control! It can teach you a ton!

Drifting will never be faster than traditional road racing due to dynamic vs static friction. Static friction is always greater than dynamic. You cant hook up and accelerate out of a turn if your already spinning the tires.

That's true but I was talking about car control not speed. Now the older guy in the Chatum chassis did RR his in a vintage class but it's just as fast as some Porsches at Hallett

Short answer, long answer, and every answer is no, it won't work. You'll plow through every turn, and if you manage not to, it's because you're hanging the rear out like a drift car. Not a good road racing approach.

I don't need to crush my nutsack in a bench vise to know it's not a good idea... I'm all for trying out new concepts, different approaches, etc., but there is NO way that a spool will be "better" on a road course than a proper limited-slip unit. Hell, I would bet I could turn better lap times with an OPEN diff than with a spool. At some point "some dude said..." has to get filtered by common sense.

Maybe he has a particular driving style he likes, or maybe he's just stubborn.

I have a customer who's an older gentleman, and he want's to put a toploader 4 speed in his '08 GT. He says it will get better mileage, and will be faster with it. He's just stubborn, and there's no convincing him otherwise.

There are C-Prepared drivers who run Detroit Lockers and other locking diffs with great success... it requires a lot different driving style though...
