Long story short... I used to cut 1.63s with a 26" et street and 4.10s, now I'm running 1.57s with a 28" et drag and 4.56s.

Last time out to the track I noticed that the car would make a continuous clunk (clunk with tire revolution) when coming to a stop and one distinctive clunk when taking off slowly. I figured that maybe my exhaust had come loose and started hitting so I didn't think much of it.

Well... I just lifted the vehicle up to do some diagnosing and rotated the driveshaft slowly back and forth and noticed a ridiculous amount of backlash. I'm almost certain that is whats causing the problem. My next step is to take the rear end apart to see the damage, but I will have to wait till I have a full day to do that.

Argh... it's sooo upsetting that this happened considering that I JUST installed those freaking gears and added a fresh set of carbon clutch packs. The spider gears do have more than 96k+ miles of abuse though so I wouldn't be surprised if they are toast. Rrrrr... I'm pissed. Oh well, just gives me another reason to tell the wife that I need to upgrade.

I think I'm just going to wind up going to a spool since I don't drive the car much at all throughout the week. What do you guys think? I'm also contemplating 4.88s. I currently cross the trap at 6200, but I make power up to 7k.

Could you explain back lash a little more.

I had a real bad clunking noise coming from my rear end after the track. I figured the diff was toast again. Turned out my lower control arms were loose and were causing the clunking. And from what you are describing it sounds identical to what my car was doing. Just something to check before you tear her down.
