I know that the proper weight of oil is 5w-20, but I have six quarts of Mobil 1 5w-30 laying around. Will this be ok, or could it be detrimental to the car?

better in the summer when it's warmer than in the cold weather. I'd save it for a summer time oil change.

Hmmm, interesting. I want a bit more weight in the high end w/o changing the low end weight and found some full syn 5w40 but it said it was for turbo deisel trucks. What exactly is the difference?

I run diesel truck oil in mine, full synthetic Shell Rotella T6. So, what do I know?

It has SAE and API ratings that allow it to be used in gasoline engines and it meets many manufacturer's standards. The fact that it meets requirements as a heavy duty diesel oil alone, means that it contains higher amounts of ZDDP (zinc dialkyl dithio phosphate) like were offered prior to the past decade, in other "gasoline only" formulas. This increased level of ZDDP offers improved wear protection over your usual product offerings which have lower levels, based on EPA regulation. It also has other useful additives, but in the intrest of keeping this short, that's pretty much the deal.

Note: IIRC, Redline and Amsoil synthetics offer higher levels in their standard formulas. I simply choose to use something I can buy at 1000 locations within a 100mi radius. As I said, what do I know...?

Disclaimer: My opinion and $1 will buy a soda.

im running 5w30 in mine, noticed a little more valvetrain noise as soon as i changed it and asked the tech at ford about it and he told me it was due to the difference in oil, however after driving about 800 miles the noise is no longer and i plan on just sticking with the 30 never had fresh oil cause a valvetrain rattle but he claimed he sees it a lot

I fought a long argument on another Mustang forum about this topic. So many people were giving out incorrect information that you have to use 5w-20 or it could damage your engine. I had to educate them about the meaning of the numbers and why you can use other oils. I stick with 0w-30. Better fuel economy and less resistance. When I start autox, I will probably go for some 5w-30 or 5w-40.

Kind of silly question, I have always used 6 quarts of oil during changes (and I believe that is what Ford uses), but have read a handful of people using 6.5 quarts.

What's the deal?

Only use 6.5 quarts if you like to post pictures of how much oil your catch-can catches.
The capacity is 6 quarts and that includes the filter.
I personally fill up the filter, install it, then fill the motor with 5 quarts and then top up to get to the middle of the dipstick, drive it a few miles and top up if necessary.

I disagree; just changed my oil this weekend and had 6 qts; put them all in, started the car to let the oil circulate, turned the car off and let it sit to allow the oil to drain and it was low; added 1/2 a qt and is it in the middle of the crosshatch area of the dipstick.

6 1/2 qts is what I will plan on.

Mine has always only taken six qts. Was using Mobil 1 5-20 switched to 5-30 after I saw the 5-20 comming out like water during the changes. May even try something up to a 40 weight in the summer here. Started using the new Castrol in the gold bottle. Anyone else trying it? As for filters, Mobil 1, have used the Motorcraft 820S, but never the orange Fram.

I guess we can debate that issue all day long. At the end of the day, just read the dipstick right?
That's all I do...And it hasn't taken more than 6 quarts. My disclaimer is that I do not fill it to the top "full" mark on the dipstick when the oil isn't at full operating temperature.
I've yet to lose a motor to oil starvation by following my owner's manual recommended oil capacity.

Me either. I always fill to the very top "cross" mark on the dipstick, and not a millimeter higher than that.

I always use the Motorcraft, as it is cheap and recommended as an OEM replacement. I heard the Mobil 1 filters are supposed to be better, but I haven't seen any data to prove it. I am always up for trying new things and I do have a lab here to analyze my oil if needed.
