Hey, I have a 2007 S197 with the 500 sound system. I find its time to replace it. From what I understand the 500 powers the 6x8's and the door 8's are powered by their own 2 amps in the passenger kick panel.

My question is, what wattage does the head unit provide to the 6x8's? The replacement radio will amp 50w to each speaker, is this similar to the stock unit?

Btw, I'm new here, if this is in the wrong subforum, let me know.

The stock HU puts out 20-22 watts peak, approximately 16-18 watts continuosly. The stock 6x8's are rated at 25 watts. I had Sony WX900-BT that drove the stock 6x8's just fine.

Gotta ask...if you plan to replace HU, why does output to speakers matter b/c aren't you planning on swapping them too? Just replace all the shitty audio w/ new & match to your new output...IMO.

Most aftermarket head units will do 50W, peak, but their RMS (average) power is closer to 22W as rated by the manufacturers. Every manufacturer rates them differently, so there's a 3rd party rating system CTA-2006 that uses a consistent test, and their ratings tend to be in the 14-18W RMS range. The Shaker 500 HU doesn't have a CTA-2006 rating, so there's no perfect direct comparison.

I'm having a hard time digging up the specs, but I believe the rear 6x8's are a much lower rating than the door speakers, maybe 14W? If you crank the volume, there's a chance that you could damage them with a new head unit.

I'm w/ Iceman -- I'd just replace the head unit and speakers at the same time. You might be able to squeak by on the stock speakers if you're careful but even the cheapest aftermarket speakers are going to give you so much better sound than the stock ones, and handle the power of an aftermarket HU to boot. Just be sure to check both the peak and RMS ratings.

Just a note -- the amps for the subs use a 5V remote power on signal from the shaker 500 to know when to turn on. Most aftermarket stereos have a 12V remote power on signal(blue wire) to turn on external amps. You'll want to wire in a 5V regulator into the adapter wire harness to keep the subs from popping every time you turn on the radio.

Be aware also that the door subs are of a low impedance load that was matched to the amps behind the drivers side kick panel I believe.

so you would be better not replacing the door subs unless you want to get into a deep R&R

Yeah I think they were dual voice coil too. I know Kicker made some shallow mount subs for the doors, but I don't remember if they were compatible w/ the stock amps.

I'm honestly not sure. That's a lot of money for a stereo/nav that's so outdated. Any maps are getting close to 15 years old, the interface is going to be slow, and your input options (USB, bluetooth, etc) are going to be very limited and the sound quality is not going to be any better than the Skipper 500.

Hi all! New to the forum. Please forgive my diving right in with a technical question. Also pardon the thread resurrection, but it applies to my scenario.

We have a 2007 Mustang GT convertible in red. It's absolutely perfect for us and looks like brand new. The only thing we want to change is the stereo. For us it sounds great as we're not audiophiles, or even close. I'm half deaf from motorcycles and loud music. :D Anyhoo - we would like to add CarPlay to the Mustang but I don't want to go down a rabbit hole of audio upgrades. I would just like to have the CarPlay nav and bluetooth capabilities.

So the question - will any old CarPlay head unit work? Or do I need to find one that has a certain output? My concern is that some of them don't even list it. I just bought a cheap one to get the nav and phone connectivity for my 2005 Jeep Rubicon Unlimited. With the stock speakers it sounds like one would expect - not great. But not horrible and that's ok on the Jeep. I would be more than happy with this one in the Mustang, but I don't want to destroy the audio quality that it has with the Shaker 500. So do I need to up my game and get a better head unit?

Any advice is very much appreciated!

In my 14, I replaced the head unit with the Dynavin9 which has apple car play. Best mod I've done. Very simplistic install and all plug and play. Today I got in some new subs for the doors and yesterday new 6x8's all around. I'm going to give them a go and see if it sounds any better. The bass is sufficient but the highs and mids are lacking. The biggest concern is aftermarket speaks on stock power. If it sounds worse or distorts I'll throw an amp on them. Have a 7 channel already that would do fine.

LOL! I just learned how incredibly not easy replacing speakers are in a 14 Shelby...lol. For whatever stupid reason I bought 6x8's all around when in fact I have have 5 1/4 and tweeters in each door. Then....I can't even put aftermarket speakers in it because of the molding around the speaker. Then on the 14's for sure maybe 13's there isn't a speaker adaptor like the earlier S197's. I'd need to get an adaptor plate to install aftermarket 6x8's. Ford discontinued one side it seems, lol. Can't find any in a junkyard and pretty much over it. I ordered some used stockers and going to attempt to fabricate a solution. How does no one make adaptor plates for these???? Ford WTH? I've been doing car stereo for a while and this by far the crappiest non aftermarket friendly set up I've ever seen. Just LOL.

I know this is old, but for anyone reading this, the 13/14 speakers have the mount integrated into the speakers in the front doors. You can use the speaker mounts from any year S197 and they will bolt on where the 13/14 speakers bolt on. This will give you a bracket you can use for aftermarket speakers.

I had figured that out afterwards. Couldn't find any in any junk yard. I ended up ordering some stock speakers and cutting them to incorporate aftermarket speakers. Worked great actually.

Always a good option. I have helped several family and friends do this in their cars.
