More progress on both houses. Today my buddy Conrad came over to hang the back doors and get rid of that nasty sliding glass door with doggy scratches in the glass and broken wheels. He had to trim about 1.5" off the top and we had to adjust for the width as well. Got it all set by 1pm then he replaced the drywall and corner beads and threw on the first coat of mud after lunch.

Also, a tree limb broke out and fell on my pool pump this morning breaking the pvc pipe coming out of the chlorinator. We were able to chisel out the broken pipe from the fitting, otherwise I would have had to buy a new chlorinator. Conrad noticed it when the pool level dropped below the skimmer and the pump started sucking air. I got that fixed this afternoon and the pool is almost refilled.

Good news on the old house as well. The electrical inspector came out today and pretty much approved everything. He said I needed GFCI protection on everything since it was a shed and the easiest way to do that was to install GFCI breakers. I picked those up this afternoon and they are being installed now.

The inspector said he was going to come back tomorrow and he would mark down today's appointment as a cancellation so I wouldn't have to pay the reinspection fee. He said to button everything up and as long as he saw the GFCI breakers he would sign off on the entire project and I would be finished. I don't even have to be there (I'm working tomorrow). I am dancing the happy dance right now.

Electrical is signed off at the old house, so two permits down and two to go.

Also, while I was looking through my closing papers yesterday I found a check for $125 made out to me. It was a refund for overpayment for some sort of charge I paid for. Glad I found the check, it was like free money!

Been having a couple very minor electrical issues lately including losing power to the water softener. This morning I decided to get up in the attic to trace the line back and find the issue. The more I look at the wiring in this house the more scared I get. I think I'm going to have to completely rewire the entire house in order to make it where I'm comfortable, never mind getting it up to code.

I got the water softener going again but it's on the same circuit as the garage lights, shop ceiling fan and living room ceiling fan. I really need to have it on a separate dedicated breaker.

Yikes! That is some scary stuff!

When you fix the wiring, reinsulate the attic. Save some coin on the power bill.

There's no insulation above the garage but the rest of the attic is well insulated. I do have a huge stash of insulation that I'll put up there but I need to address the falling drywall first. I'm debating pulling it down and putting up new drywall or just nailing another layer over it. Possibly some thin, lightweight paneling or something.

Started ripping out the kitchen cabinets today. I have quite a bit of work to do before the new cabinets go in.

I wish I had a respirator. I'm normally quite resistant to that sort of thing (I cut trees for a living) but I'm definitely feeling a bit of a sinus infection thing going on this morning. Hopefully it's mild and passes quickly.

Today I'm off to buy drywall to replace the wall I cut out and I also need to extend the soffit at the left end of the kitchen towards the refrigerator. I already removed all the wallpaper so the next step will be to skim everything and prep for paint.

You should spray that wall with some bleach solution to kill whatever mold spores are left.
Bleach/water solution. May smell for a bit but will eventually dry and smell will go away.

I did, thanks. I also spent a few extra minutes bug proofing the kitchen before sealing it up. I don't understand why nobody ever bothers sealing up all the holes into the kitchen. After all, what is the one thing you absolutely, positively do not want in the kitchen? BUGS! But every kitchen I've seen has tons of custom made pathways and hiding spots for bugs. Ridiculous!

Here I sealed up around the plumbing openings. I also filled in the gaps in the cement blocks where the mason didn't bother mudding all the way around. I'm sure there's other gaps elsewhere but I'm not pulling all the drywall in the house.

I also used some Styrofoam insulation to replace the blown in moldy stuff. Then the drywall. Again, trying to fill in all the gaps.

Doc said I had a bronchial infection going on as well as my sinuses so he prescribed antibiotics. Good news is my pharmacy didn't charge me a dime for them.

Drywall is almost ready for paint. I keep screwing up trying to get it skimmed out perfect and I'm not willing to look at some blemish in an obvious spot forever so I keep skimming and sanding.

I also spent an hour on my knees scrubbing the floor with a scotchbrite pad getting up the old marks where the old cabinets sat. You can only see the lines in a couple spots now.

Congrats Brian, spent the last hour reading this thread. it was reading like a mystery novel and couldn't stop reading.. Just had to find out the outcome looking forward to more post.. Nice tile work and very nice house... I gave up on the other forums.. So I will make this my new home

Good seeing you again, been a while since fnsweet and the short lived roushforums.

This is where it stands today. I'm feeling a bit better but still have a major case of anal glaucoma (can't see my ass doing this today). Started the first coat of paint and kept finding spots that needed to be re skimmed so I'm waiting until I get the will to skim drywall again. I went through a bit of work to eliminate the wall texture in the kitchen areas, but obviously didn't bother doing anything with the walls behind the cabinets other than make sure there were no bug access holes. I still need to extend the soffitt and I need to swap out one of the upper cabinets because I made a mistake measuring.
