I did a search looking for the answer to this one but unfortunately didn't find any information. The dealership assured me they would be able to get the scent out with a detail of the car but they didn't come through on their promise. I've tried several different remedies from a bowl of vinegar in the car over night to Meguiar's Odor Eliminator. All of the stuff I've tried so far has fallen short, only working temporarily. My thought is to shampoo the carpets thoroughly and then apply some sort of odor eliminator. I've changed the cabin filter and my other remedies have weakened the odor but I want it completely gone. Any thoughts/products to try?

I've found the smell lingers most in the headliner. So far, repeated applications of Fabreze (or similar) have gotten the odor out of my Excursion and my Mustang.

I've posted this before, not sure if it was here or another message board but here this may help;

There's a few things that you can do. I would start by fully vacuuming the interior, and change the cabin filter. Sometimes it's as easy as that.

There are products such as the Dakota Odor Bomb, and the DP Odor Elminiator. Both are fogger type aerosol products that will consume the interior and help eliminate the odor particles.

Also, 1Z Einszett makes a product called Klima Cleaner that is a foaming air duct treatment to help kill any odor causing bacteria in the air ducts.

Usually it's a matter of finding the source of the odor to take care of the problem in the long term. There are dozens upon dozens of short term solutions. Most of those can be found at a local gas station.

Hope that helps, good luck

Toss a sweaty sock in there. It'll kill the odor.:bong:

I had this problem when I bought my car a few years ago. Put a small bowl of white vinegar on the floorboard when it's parked at home. Make sure the windows are up and if you can sit it in the sun it will work faster. I did it for about a week and the smoke smell was gone. Change the cabin filter too.

I had this problem with my last vehicle...Probably not what you want to do, but it worked perfect and it smelled like a brand new vehicle. Smoke smell never came back. It does not 'band-aid' the problem

1. Took all of the interior out of the truck (seats, consoles, etc)
2. Took all the carpet out, floor mats, etc
3. Removed headliner
3. Scrubbed all the metal and cleaned every single interior piece in that was in vehicle
4. Pressure washed the carpet and let dry for 2 days
5. Had headliner removed and put in new fabric (great way to upgrade to whatever material you want)
6. Had the seats redone in leather (seats needed it anyways - cloth was ripping, worn out, burn holes, and stained all over)
7. Put in carpet, consoles, and seats back in.

I grabbed an air purifier from the house and let it run on full blast in my car overnight and it really did a nice job of getting rid of smoke smells.

Alot of people forget to vaccume the headliner, also using some upolstery cleaner on the headliner (test an area first) might help as well
It helped in my old truck.

What I did was get some towels and a bowl and soak the towels in distilled white vinegar. Place the bowls around the vehicle a few hours or overnight. Might have a vinegar smell for a bit but it got rid of the smell.
