Cherry Poppin' Post
Grimace is "correct", For some unknown reason, Ford used a fluid that is not very user friendly. I researched for months as to exactly what could be "Gear Blocking" my shifts. There are many different theories, and I'm not one to throw money at a problem HOPING it fixes the issue. I like to know what I am fixing is what the issue is. That being said, I'm smart, but I don't have a degree in Mechanical Engineering(which is really what I needed), while researching I found mixed reviews on aftermarket shifters and brackets, mixed reviews on the TSB fluid swaps, mixed reviews on motor/trans mounts. Some people claimed it help, some claimed no difference, some say it made it worse. So I'll explain how I came to my current situation.
)Shifters/Brackets Due to the flexing of the trans in relation to the body, a firmer mount to the body is actually going to Mis-Align the entire assembly under high tq loads, also a shorter throw is going to increase shift effort, not the direction I wanted to go.
)Fluids, didn't think that they were a very important part of the puzzle.
)Engine/Trans mounts, in theory this should help keep things aligned, but I realized that wasn't what the problem was when I was driving, At first when I would get blocked, I would try again or try a different gear. Instead of doing that I would hold the shifter in the position where it was blocked and wait for everything to settle down, and then bam, it would go in.....Didn't have to move it left or right, it wasn't gates that were to close, or my shift being off to the left or right, the damn gate was just blocked....
Which made me start thinking, what makes the shifter slide into the gear? The Synchro's, so I started researching synchro's until my brain hurt. What makes Synchro's work, Friction......HUH, friction makes synchro's work, what the hell were they thinking. I need a quality lubricant to keep heat and wear down, but I need friction for the Synchros to work, that's got to be my problem.
So after looking at all the fluids out there, there are quality fluids available, I choose BG Synchro Shift II and all I can say is AMAZING, and that's after just 3 miles of driving. Does this resolve the Cold shift effort and grinds, don't know yet, will this resolve my whining bearings, likely not. But it does make it so I can shift the car into the gear of my choice, at the time of my choice. F U GEARBLOCKS
