I have the 5R55S transmission. I identifed the nature of the problem being the turbine speed sensor. I know it is located on top of the transmission towards the drivers side near the bell housing, however, how do you get to it? I saw a video of the same trans, in a ford explorer, but does not help in identifying how to access it. I have my car jacked up about 21 inches on jack stands, but don't seem to be able to see the sensor. Any ideas on how to accomplish this "straight forward" repair, as it has been described?

On the 5R55S, the turbine speed sensor is on top of the trans driver side near the bellhousing, but you usually can't reach it cleanly from underneath on jack stands.
Best access:
* Remove air intake + battery/tray
* Reach down from the top driver side of engine bay
Underneath access is possible but very blind and tight top side is usually the "straightforward" way people end up using.

Hmmm, the battery tray is on the opposite side of the engine as the sensor is. The drivers side has the brake system in the way. hmmm.

Has anyone personally replaced the TSS sensor on a 2005–2009 Mustang GT 4.6 with the 5R55S while the transmission was still installed? If so, what exactly did you remove for access?

Not done it personally but according to the manual the easiest method (if your hands/tools won't fit) may be loosening the transmission cross member to create enough space to access the mounting bolt for the TSS. Obviously, be very careful to support the transmission without stretching any cabling/tubing/exhaust connections. Honestly, if it were me this is one of those jobs I'd have a shop do as they have lifts, tools and extra personnel that make it easier to work in tight spaces. My age and my back aren't getting any younger and while I still like to work on the car there are some jobs that just aren't worth the extra wear and tear on my body these days.

Good luck.
