I have a 2005 Mustang 5R55S transmission, has a 3500 stall(not sure why, bought it that way) shifts through gears fine but has issue going in reverse, you usually have to put it in drive then in reverse to get it to move

3500 stall is a drag racing converter. There's a whole slew of things the trans could have going on (burned up clutches, bad servos, bad reverse pump, solenoid debris, bad fluid level, worn shift cable...could go on).

What's your level of wrenching and how much hassle do you want vs taking it to a shop?

Before tearing it down you might want to check the cable linkage. There is a spot on there where you can adjust it. Maybe it doesn't go into reverse from park because the cable is not moving far enough. When you move it into drive and then back into reverse it may be moving the cable far enough to engage the reverse. Just a thought.

Possible sticky valve body/reverse servo/or reverse band issues. Inspection/repair can be done yourself but if you don't know your way around auto's best to have a transmission shop diagnose it.

Not exhaustive; but here's a good rundown of things to look at:

I have a similar issue (usually have to move it back to Park/then Reverse) though I don't consider it that much of a problem so I just live it for now...
