Figure I may as well upgrade the alternator while I’m upgrading the sound system n stuff. I’ve read a few things about putting in one from a Crown Vic...? What years fit my 2006 if so? Any other suggestions?

Hmmmm yeah went to the website and did some reading. I’m just now learning about the S197’s so that’s the 1st I’ve heard of the over spinning issue. $320 is steep but if it worth it...

Heard some people have switched to this setup. Something about having to switch out an isolator and a ceramic washer though..?

You have a few choices here:

    1. Stock alternator

    2. Upgrade the amperage with a PA Performance alternator. You can go all the way up to 200 amps, which is what I did. Available through a number of suppliers, including American Muscle. If you go straight through PA, you can also get them custom painted for a fee.

    3. Department of Boost and the 2010+ alternators. They make the argument that upgrading the amperage beyond a certain point is not helpful. They also note that the stock alternator, as well as the upgraded PA alternators, are the "6G" style, which is supposed to be far less reliable. They offer a different style (2010+) which is more amperage than stock (160 amps?), and not 6G. NOTE: The DOB one will not work with Kenne Bell SCs.

    4. The Crown Vic alternator. I tried this route but, like the DOB alternator, it would not work with my Kenne Bell. They are cheap and high output. I don't know if they are 6G. You will need a ceramic spacer/isolator for the power wire, as the configuration on the back of the alternator is a little different than those made for Mustangs. There is a thread on this forum about the install.

The crown vic alt is a 6g but the 05+ p71 alternators are what you want. Theyre I think 200 amp and are made by mitsubishi. Also I believe they have a clutched pulley. Only p71’s had them though so be mindful of that if youre looking for one. Ive heard good things about the 10 gt alt made by Denso too.

If I had to buy a new alternator Id buy one of those two and skip rebuilt/remanufactured or aftermarket alternators.

I have a KB and DOB alt. They fit together. There are 2 mods needed. The main power post needs to be cut down. Simple enough, its way longer than needed anyway. The second mod is the field connector plug needs to be changed. I just cut it off and put on 3 individual connectors with the wires at 90 deg.
