Having what I have diagnosed as a faulty voltage regulator. Voltage at OBDII varies wildly with RPM, dropping below 12v sometimes at idle but able to get above 14v running above idle.

Question is:
Should I just replace entire alternator or pull alternator and only swap out voltage regulator?
It is a 21 year old car, probably original alternator and 170k miles.
Should I just replace entire alternator, since from what I have found I need to pull alternator to replace voltage regulator anyway? Obviously alternator is more expensive than regulator, but not a lot ($200ish for top brands).
It is an extra car, but have no plans to get rid of it, love my convertible!

TIA for advise! Trolls will be ignored

Deffinitely replace the whole alternator. Also check the Smart Junction Box for any signs of water intrusion.

If you don't want to wait get a Denso (09 or 10). If you can wait have an alternator shop rebuild it. Probably about the same cost wise.
