What is 'FRPP'? (i'm guessing genuine Ford part?)
I'm looking to swap out the 3.55's on my supercharged Saleen for 3.73's I find the 3.55's good for economy and cruising long distance but lacking a touch on acceleration

I have re-read this thread 2 times and I am still not sure what to go with. So many pros and cons about each one. I had 4.10's in my 03 and steped down to 3.73's. But this car is auto and reves higher............my head hurts.

frpp is Ford Racing Performance Parts,
Autos dont go higher then 410, you may want 373 if your going to FI your car, If 410s seem high go 3.90.
Stick go 410 or 430 if you are going to stay NA
you can search for the ratios and see what you will be revving at with the respected gear.

I love 4:10's with my auto, light to light and the 1/4(only been once though)...But, It winds out too quick on the highway..If I was to do it all over again, I would have went with 3:73's..But 4:10's make since with my auto and a Vortech, It gets to boost quick..

So what would the effective gear ratio be if I put in 373's with a 26.6" in tall tire? Is there a formula I can use to figure it out myself?

Jon

Don is right, especially if you run a large diameter wheel. A larger diameter wheel will effectively make your gear ratio taller (higher gear lower number). In some cases a 28" tire can take 4.10s to an effective 3.90 ratio.

Hope this helps.

3.80ish

The "effective" gear should be the proper question/answer. 26" v 28" tire is just as important as knowing N/A or F/I.

4.10s w/26" tires are effectively 4.30ish

4.10's with a 26.6 inch tall tire, it works just fine. (N/A)

i ran 4.10's in my 00gt, with a 25.6 in tall tire, no problems (N/A)

i made a road trip after installing the hot rod cams and with the 4.10's got 24mpg, and the motor spins around 2400rpm.

don't fear the gear, anything less than a 4.10 is a waste of time.....unless of course you got tons of hp....imho

wish i woulda gone 4.30's, to be honest.

but, more gear equals more tire spin. so if you install a gear and go to the track without good tires (drag radials), you might be disappointed with your e.t.'s

Ok so I dont need to make a new useless thread.

What gear for...

Whipple HO, 484rwhp, 469rwtq, TR3650, 28" tall tire, looking for max acceleration. Tires will be 305/45/18 Nitto DR's or 295/45/18 Nitto 555's. (current gear is 3.55)

I would like some traction in 1rst and 2nd.

Thanks,

4.10 .....if your going to dump that kinda cash on gears worry about tires later imo , the nittos will hold pretty good but down the line if you step up to a better tire you will be kicking yourself for not having enough gear ...

That is what I have been thinking for a while.

I think i will buy the tires and wheels along with an Alum D/S and drive that a while, and then add the 4.10's.

Thanks for the input, I was just afraid they might be a little too much, but I really want greater pull in 3rd and 4rth. I am also hoping the increased rpm will help me slow down on the highway.

Do you think I should just do a tru trac while I am having the gears installed? It shouldnt cost anything more in labor right?

The car has 21K miles on it and I plan to run DR's on the street off and on for the rest of the life of the car. But it will always be my DD or close to it.
