what is this/ where does it go? (pics)

just got some bodywork done, and I am in the middle of an oil change, I noticed this thing here isn't bolt down, has a little spring covered in rubber it feels like? Here's a pic, what is this / where does it go?

Looks like a piece that makes contact with the hood? Is there one on the right side?

That's exactly what it is. It clips to the upper inner fender. The rubber part has a sensor that's engaged when the hood is down.

It is part of the factory alarm system. I'm surprised you aren't getting random alarms with the sensor not set up. It should be triggering a signal that the hood is open. When you hit the locks on your key fob does the horn beep twice? The double beep tells you that a sensor is reading open.
