What should it cost?

Checked with my local Ford dealer on the cost to swap out the ring and pinion gears on my 2010 GT (going to a 4.10). I was told the cost was $979 for labor. Seems high, but I am not a mechanic.

Is this a reasonable price?

We have a guy here locally Ky that does it for $200.00 labor and he is top notch. This will give you and idea of what the dealership is trying to do to you. Most big private shops will be under $500.00 labor.

Id try to find a shop or individual you trust thats A LOT cheaper. $900 is crazy, one of my friends helped me do mine for free. Having just helped him i wouldnt try to do it myslef but he had done a handful before and was out and in in a few hours. If someone knows what theyre doing its a really easy job.

Swapping the gears is no big deal, the technical part is being able to accurately measure the lash and shim the gears properly. Many years ago I swapped my own gears in an 88 F150 and they held up for a year and a half before grenading. I didn't get them shimmed properly.

OMG that's expensive. I was thinking $300 tops for an overpriced dealership install.

I got to know the mechanics at the local Ford delaership. One guy puts my gears in for $150 and uses the exact same tools as he would if he were at the dealership doing it.

Shoot..he did some for me years ago for an old 7.5 ring and pinion and a six pack of cold beverage.

Wow a place that charges more than shops on Maui! I paid a 4x4 shop $500. They do fords all day so I knew I could trust them on a perfect install........and is was.

If you want to make a drive, there's a guy in Columbus that can do it pretty cheap. Rob Hand 614 339-6056. He did the longtubes on my 06 GT and does quality work.

I payed 150 and the job was amazing no gear whine at all! Try to find a ford tech most of the time they'll do after hours jobs for little to nothing compared to dealership work
