05 GT "Humming" Noise.

So, here is my situation.

The car has an aftermarket warranty, but, my fear is a Dealer won't be able to diagnose the problem, and I'll have to pay out of pocket hundreds of dollars, which I don't have.

This started 1, maybe 2 months ago.

I DD the car, stock trans, stock clutch, etc. The noise occurs at any point and time and is ALWAYS there. Never really happened in 3rd, but now 3rd is noticeable.

Basically, when at any speed, in 3rd, 4th or 5th, each time you let off the gas, there is a loud whirring/humming noise. When I hit the clutch, the noise goes away. It's hard to describe, but it is a high pitched humming noise almost.

I have no idea where it's coming from. I thought it was my rear end, as I had a diff leak. I fixed that, put a new diff cover on, RP Fluid 75W-140, the noise didn't change. Slowly but surely, the noise is becoming more and more frequent and louder.

What are your thoughts guys?

Really trying to avoid spending money on a diagnosis, but will have it if I must.

IME a noise like that could be coming from your rear suspension. I know when I replaced everything on mine with UMI roto-joints I got a whirring noise out of the rear that is pretty much there all the time although it gets louder depending on the throttle.

You might wanna just lift the rear up and grease the rear suspension especially the LCA bushings.

it is very possible that you pinion bearings are whats causing the noise with the tip in and out your describing, a fluid change will not help that. the best way to pin it down is to set the car up on a lift and drive it and see if the noise is coming from the pinion area of the differential... if a lift is unavailable jack stands will work but be extremly careful...hope this helps

Oddly enough, this noise did happen after I changed out my LCA's from stock to UMI non roto joints.

I greased the bushings prior to the install, torqued them to spec, etc. I've noticed a hell of a lot more clunking too. Anytime I barely even touch the throttle, the noise comes back. If I let off the gas, the noise is there but almost fades out a bit.

It's weird. I thought it was the tires, yet, I've changed through 3 sets, still the same thing.

I will grease up every bushing possible, and see if that helps.

Weird thing is, I've gone through 2-3 different sets of LCA's between my 05 and 07 GT, all of which had poly bushings, and none have ever made this noise until the UMI's.

I don't think this is a bushing sound, but I could be wrong.

If I am at a high RPM and speed, the noise is much louder and you can hear it over my exhaust (which is not loud). Once I hit the clutch to disengage, the noise fades away. I've tested it several times, and it's only when the car is in gear/under load.

My comments were more along the lines of if he hadn't put any grease on there or if it needed regreasing it might be particularly bad. But yeah mine are greased correctly and I get the whirring noise all the time. The pitch does vary depending on throttle.

hmm, my gut says its the rear end, however I when I had similar noises it was under the reverse circumstance. Under load it was quieter then under coasting

I think it may be the pinion bearing.

I may just have to drop it off at Ford and see what they say. I'll make sure to take them with so they can hear the noise.

I'm kind of at a loss, and wish I could get rid of this car without going thousands negative.

I was thinking that. Maybe the pilot bearing, throwout bearing?

You want to rule out the LCA then put the stock ones back in. Take you half an hour to swap them out then go for a test drive.

Only problem is, we are in the 30's and 40's here, and it's colder than shit.

lol I know how that is. Get yourself some good warm clothes on and a good set of mechanic's gloves. Make it a lot easier on you. If you can get it into a garage just to do this (buddy?) then you'll be in better shape yet.

For sure. I've got a 2 car garage, it's just a bitch to do this.

I've pretty much lost all motivation to work on cars, haha.

When the winter starts creeping in my motivation goes to pretty much zero. Without a heated garage - F that. Stuff waits until spring. Kinda easier to do that when the car is under a cover for four months though. If I were nearby I'd be happy to help you knock that out in a matter of minutes.

I'd be real surprised if the issue isn't just noise from those aftermarket bushings. In fact I'd almost put money on it.
