I recently had an issue with one of my rear drains becomming completely clogged and soaking the interior. I found very little info on where these drains were and how to get to them on the net, so I thought I would do a quick how to in case anyone runs into the same problem.

1. Remove rear seats.

2. Remove plastic trim panels.

3. Detach and remove speaker.

4. Remove seatbelt.

At this point, you should be looking at something like this:

The drain is located inside that little hole behind the convertible top piston. If you have large hands, you may want to unbolt the piston for the top and move it out of the way.

5. Remove the cover plastic cover for the drain directly behind the piston. This can be a little bit of a PITA. There is a clip on one side that you should be able to push in to release.

6. Unless you have small hands, you will need to either remove the quarter window/track/motor or at least unbolt it to try and push it out of the way to gain more access to the drain. Should be three nuts.

With the window out of the way, you should be able to see the drain:

My drain was caked in black dirt. I scooped some dirt off with my finger and all the standing water rushed out. Had some leaves and pine needles on the other side.

All in all not too bad a job, especially considering Ford wanted over $300 to do this. If there is another way to get to these things, I havent found it. Poor design IMO. Anyway, hope this helps out.

Might have to do this when the car comes out of storage.

I regularly check the drains on the firewall, and heard of the drain for the verts but never knew where it was.

Thanks!

No problem guys.

I actually had to rip everything apart again today. Apparently I didn't get all the debris out and after 3 days of rain it clogged up again. Not nearly as bad as before though. But if ya'll have a clogged drain, make sure to get everything out that you can.

On another note, these are the only two drains I'm aware of. Are there any other places that water can get trapped that I should take a look at?

Just the 2 grommets in the firewall, and I always just make sure the cabin air filter isn't clogged.

But thats to help prevent the water entering the driver/passenger floor.

Bwhahaha. Similar process on my dad's 96 except those tops let in leaves and sticks too. About once a year I get to do this and have at it with a shop vac.

I dig convertibles but this is not something I miss. Great write up though, wish we had had something like it!

Awesome. Im trying to fix all the leaks or places where water can get in the car. I had the waterfall behind the glovebox. Ford fixed it, but I still get a small trickle down the kick panel. Just enough to get the carpet wet. Guess thats my next project.

No kidding. The couple months a year that I can comfortably put the top down dont really justify the added cost and maintenance.

I would check the 2 grommets on the firewall like I said, and make sure your cabin air filter isn't all clogged up too, because that can cause some water to leak in as well.
