front end "groaning" sound

Any ideas on what this sound could be on my front end. I get it on slow tight turns usually when I'm turning to park. Its not a popping sound like strut mounts would produce although I wouldn't rule them out. Its not the T-lok diff groaning since I'm running a trutrac posi although it makes a light knocking sound when it wants to coming to a stop. My suspension wise the car is running D-specs and Eibach pro-kit springs along with some rear suspension mods. Any ideas? I plan to put her on a lift this weekend and beat away till I find something loose or broken.

I'm having the same issue.....check if there's a TSB out there for it. There's been plenty of them for other issues.

Check your wheel bearings.
A guy here has had to replace his assemblies twice now in 28k.
I am looking into redesign of the hub.
But I need the part numbers off the inner and outer bearings.
Want to see if I can improve on the design or make them rebuildable.
Any help would be appreciated.

Getting the same thing with 3k miles on the Bullitt.

I thought it was just the noisy tires?

It might well be your front swaybar endlinks. Check to see if they are loose, if they are, sock em down with some Loctite and it should go away.

Even with the Loctite, I've had to re-tighten them now and again.

My front end swaybar endlinks occasionally work themselves loose too. If they are loose I usually get a thunk sound with those anytime I hit a bump. I'll check those out too.

Have you ruled out the possibility that it is the steering rack groaning? Mine has been doing it for about a year and a half.

Look for tight bearings and rust.
The bad one I have in my hand the inner bearing is tight.
The outer is much smoother and rolls easier.
The tight one is bad.

Anything in particular that would cause the rack to groan? Is it something thats should be remedied? If its just a sound thats fine but if it is something that is going bad then I wanna work it. My steering feels fine but it does make that noise even when I turn the wheel at zero mph. I did take into account that the steering rack could be making the sound but given the fact that my car is lowered on aftermarket shocks I was focusing on the areas that where touched. Good call Don!

Honestly I was concerned about mine going out when it first started. It hasn't gone out yet, so I said fuck it.

Reviving an old thread.

I've been looking all over the Internet and have come to the conclusion that the groaning I hear from the front of my car is the steering rack.

It didn't start until recently. It usually happens when I'm turning at slower speeds or just slowing pulling out of a parking lot or something similar. Turning the wheel is when it groans/creaks.

I know my steering wheel still has a very bad shimmy in it even after replacing the front LCA's with the GT500 ones, having my tires rebalanced and rotated, and putting on new front rotors and brake pads since my old ones were warped. The driver side struts looks as if it's slowly leaking fluid so I have some Koni STR.T dampers and Steeda CC plates that I'm going to put on soon.

If it truly is the steering rack, is there any way to get rid of it? I read on some other Mustang forum something about replacing bushings on the rack? Is that even possible? I wonder if the shimmy might actually be from the steering rack afterall.

I've had several noisy things come from the front end of my car over the years. Basically I ended up replacing everything...Front sway bar and bushings, struts, springs, rotors, pads, stainless brake lines, sway bar end links, gt500 a-arms with new bushings, gt500 strut tower mounts. Everything is quiet now (crossing my fingers) and hoping it'll stay that way.

Slight groan every once in a while as well. I've checked all of the common causes, and everything is good. I dunno...guess I'll just ignore it.

I feel like I'm pretty much doing the same thing trying to rid the car of the shimmy in the steering wheel and now this comes about.

Are you sure it's not your steering pump? Check your fluid it may be low or need to be changed.

Yes, and it's fine. How would you change the fluid?

You can tell it's a suspension/bushing type of creaking noise.

Okay. It's definitely something with the steering components.

My car is still under the extended warranty until this December. It makes the noise pretty much all the time now. I wonder how hard it will be to try and get them to fix it.
