Yeah when I talk to people that do not know that much about cars, I just give them the "liter" size, as that is what they know from the magazines, etc.

Still fewer realize that there is 61 cubic inches per liter--so I do the math for them. So in my case I just say "its 572 cubic inches, or basically a 9.4 liter".

I've had the 5.0 since 07/10. I got a TON of "Hey! I didn't know they brought back the old 5.0! Sweet!" I would have to proceed to tell them that the only thing it shares with the "old 5.0" is the displacement. Which prompted me to my vanity plate: NTPSHRD

Actually, and someone correct me if I am wrong, but the old 5.0Ls were actually 302 cubic inch which is actually 4.9L and the new 5.0L is actually 5.0L or 305 cubic inch. So really you only share a name and not displacement. You might share firing order though.... maybe... I don't know.

When I talk to older classic car owners I always refer to my car as a 4.6L 3v V8 and if they ask about the cubic inch displacement I tell them it is 281 and that Ford had to cut the other 8 cubic inches out to save money. That usually gets some good laughs.

90% of the population doesn't know a damn thing about cars other that turn key, step on brake, put in gear, press on gas peddle, steer.

The 302 is indeed 4.9 litres, but so was the 300 I6. So Ford rounded up to 5.0 to avoid confusion. Ford did the same thing with the 351W. It's the same bore/stroke as the 352FE, but to avoid confusion they rounded down to 351. I believe the 351W metric 5.8 was also rounded up.

Firing orders are different. 302 H.O., 351W, 4.6 and 5.4 all have the same firing order. The new DOHC 5.0 has the same firing order as the original Ford V8. The legendary Flathead.

The new 5.0 DOHC is 3.629" bore & 3.649" stroke for 301.9448788 cubic inches. Push rod 302 was 4.00" bore & 3.00" stroke for 301.5928947 cubic inches. If you want to get precise.

You tree'd me saying this, hence one of the reasons why the 5.0 sounds more similar to a LSx motor.

^^ TRUTH!!

I was out front of a friends house one day cleaning down the 67 the guy next door says "thats a nice car, what is it?" I said "it's a 67 mustang" he says "nope I'm pretty sure it's a cougar"

I thought he was kidding but he wasn't... lol I said "no it's a mustang i'm sure of that" he just walked off and said "I don't think it is"

Like I don't know what kind of classic car I have... :asshat:

LSx = 1-8-7-2-6-5-4-3
5.0 DOHC = 1-5-4-8-6-3-7-2
5.0H.O./351W/4.6/5.4 = 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8

Not the same.

Not the same.

note to self, that was an incorrect assumption on my part.

Edit: still not the same but when I was in LSx world, some strokers would use the following order, which could give a "similar" harmonics:

1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2

It is partly done to take advantage of the intakes.

Hmm so much for Ford giving us a proper 5.0L and all the magazines saying it was a true 5.0L. Thanks for the info! ;)

289 and early 302's used 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8.

Yeah for the masses I won't even attempt that discussion (overhead cam vs pushrod)--unless its someone truly interested. But if its a passing comment, I wouldn't even bother.

Yes, I'm thinking of changing the plate now that they're more prominent. But the first several comments were at car cruises and an Autocross.....

People ask me if my car has a 5.0. When I tell them it's a 4.6, they say "oh then it's a V6".

If Im talking to someone and theyre talking in cubes I just say the new one is a 305 and the old one was a 289 (Im pretty sure its is).

When I bought my car the salesperson seemed to think the new 5.0 was like an upgraded version of the old windsor "5.0", commenting "Im glad they brought it back".
