So, my first choice in rebuilding my car is to find an S197 Mustang and transfer all of the parts that can be.

In my search, however, I have found that the V6 models are much cheaper vs the V8's.

So, I know the V6 uses the same auto trans (5R55S). I would have to swap my 8.8 rearend and replace the V6's 7.5. But what about the K-Member, is it the same---so I could just drop in the 3V? And the PCM, would I have to pull out the PCM in the V6 (and wiring harness), and replace with my PCM and wiring?

Any other differences?

Both cars use a 5r55 tranny but are different. You will want the 4.6 tranny. Front brakes (the only differences are the brackets for the caliper and the rotors on the GT are 1" larger). The standard v6 05-08 do not have a rear antiroll bar and the front one is smaller (I am sure this is not a problem and you would be upgrading anyway but is different). You will have to swap PCMs. I think the K member is different but will have to check. Hope this helps.

Paul for a car you want to race your better off starting off a v6 body. Why do you think Greg built the V6 Shelby off a v6 body.

If it where me I would get some drag brakes, manual rack etc. You dont even need windows, get lexan

Montreal Qc,
Is your K-Member damaged Paul?

If not I'd drop the K-Member with engine, trans, front brakes attached and bolt it right in to the V6 Chassis.

I doubt that you bent the K-Member. I hit the divider pretty hard with the drivers front wheel and it broke the tie rod but the K-Member stayed straight.

Hard to tell, but I was looking at it closely today and didn't see any obvious signs of damage. That would be the easiest way to go. Only real PITA will be the PCM and wiring harness.

BTW, I looked for Lexan windows for our cars, could only find windshield and back window, at $458 each!! I guess if you wanted to do the doors it would have to be just a sheet and cut to fit.

Percy's makes all the windows in Lexan in various thicknesses and even offer complete kits. http://www.percyshp.com/Speedglass.html

To answer some of your questions, the k-member in a V6 is the same, the auto trans while both are 5R's the V6 has a different bellhousing and the input shaft is smaller.

PCM and wiring harness would have to be changed, unless you plan on leaving 2 injectors unhooked and using the V6 coil pack (V6 doesn't use COPs). The V6 PCM doesn't have the capability of controlling 8 injectors and 8 coils.

OMG!! I was looking ALL OVER for that! Thanks much for the link! Looks like I can get everything for it!

Also, since the trans is different---that doesn't matter as I already have the trans---but what about the crossmember---will my 5R55S bolt up to the car with no changes?

Also---how hard is it to change out the wiring / PCM? Is it just a patience thing, where you go slow and label everything--just time consuming, or is it a major PITA?

The trans crossmember is the same for both the V6 and GT, no problems there.

Since the PCM is in the engine bay pulling the harness is actually very easy. You only need to change the engine bay harness and it's a cake walk. We pull the entire engine bay harness out anytime we have a motor out as it makes it easier to do other things in the engine bay and that way you don't have to worry about the harness scratching anything while you are working on the car. Just make sure you start putting the harness back in before you put the motor back in. We don't label the harness but we have a little more practice with it, but in reality with a little common sense and just watching how the harness wants to lay back in the car it's easy to put them back. The harness will naturally fall back into place.

Just send your good parts to PMP and send them a used V6 and let them send you back a bad ass race car! Kevin and Josh do good work.
Also, if your making this a track only car, do you have any plans of removing some of the passenger compartment to save weight? What about removing the power window stuff?

You sure about that. My buddies v6 is the base model and has a rear swaybar. he has absolutely no options on it

Yep, I am looking at fiberglass doors to. But the interior I want to look relatively friendly, as in carpet still in, factory dash still in, back seat still in, (since it weighs only 10 lbs anyway) and just a Corbeau racing seat for the drivers seat. No passenger seat, however. That is my vision right now, anyway.

That sounds interesting, even though it is a race only car, do you plan on keeping it street legal? I'm not sure if fiberglass doors are legal on the road, but it sounds like your going to built a awesome car.

Did he buy it new or used? One of my Soldiers bought a 05 V6 around the same time I bought my 05 GT and his didn't have a rear sway bar.

I want this thing LIGHT. Its already done a 10.544 weighing in a 3776 (with me in the car), so if I can lighten it up by 300 lbs or so watch out! Oh, and that was at 16 psi. I just changed it to 18 psi.

I bet you could loose more then 300lbs with a primarily track car. All that emissions stuff under the trunk. All the wiring in the crew compartment for things like power locks and windows. Sound deadener, etc. Heck the stock wiring harness is over 400lbs by its self isn't it?
