Finally going to get around to installing my Vibrant Resonators, and from what I've read in other threads there is talk about staggering, but not much about spacing.

So... who's staggered their resonators and how far apart are they?

Or... does it really not make a difference in a turbo setup?

It wouldn't make one difference on a single turbo. Put them wherever they fit.

On a regular setup, I'd like to see some actual data on whether staggering works.

Staggering is done to remove the drone, it works.

We staggered them on one of our cars. Pretty much eliminated drone.

I understand the theory, but I want to see some actual examples. Because I added resonators lined up, and it pretty much eliminated the drone too. But not completely. So I'd like to see where someone had them lined up like mine, then changed to staggered, and saw a result.

Eliminating most of the drone by simply adding staggered resonators doesn't convince me that staggering works. I'm not saying it doesn't either, I'm just saying it's not proof enough for me to want to hack up my exhaust again to change it.

Sam there have been a few articles written about it. The one I read was from popular mechanics of all places. They did exactly what you are asking. I have resonators on my car and they are staggered by about 5 inches. As you know the factory 5.0 resonators are next to each other. I had muffler deletes on the car and with the factory resonators they droned horribly. With the aftermarket resonators staggered they didnt drone.

We had the resonators lined up then staggered them. It made a pretty big difference.

We staggered them about 12"

I could probably only get mine about 5" apart at the most, so I think I'll just leave it alone. Since I switched to the JBA mufflers, there really isn't a drone to speak of now. I'm finally really satisfied with the overall sound of the car.

I don't think the drone is bad in any of these cars really. I probably wouldn't go out of my way to do it. We did our 2010 because it was on the lift, needed a little exhaust adjustment and there just happens to be a fab shop 15' away.

The best thing anyone can do is Dynamat the car. I'm a freak about weight, but that stuff is worth every oz. My 2007 is so loud it can actually hurt your ears.......if you're outside the car. Inside the car I can talk on a cell phone no problem. And the cabin temps are super cool. If I wasn't so lazy I would do my F-150 too.

I've been on the fence about dynamat, but I think you've swayed me. I wasn't excited about adding 40lbs (2 boxes worth), but I do think it would be worth it. Besides, what's another 40lbs on 3800?

My resonators are lined up for the most part within a 1/4" of each other and no drone.

You won't notice the 40lb........but you will notice how much nicer it is in the car.

I've done 4 s197's from the firewall to the taillights. It only takes 3-4hrs.

Running Dynamat is like letting BMW engineers borrow it for the weekend.

You mean it's going to have electrical issues when you get it back :(

The drone comes from the "clashing" of sound waves with similar frequencies. Staggering or disrupting the sound waves through other methods reduces/eliminates it. Think of the pipes as a giant tuning fork. If they were perfectly symmetrical, then it would cause drone just like a tuning fork generates a tone when you hit it against a surface.

This is the reason why the factory 5.0 resonators are flattened in different areas on each side. Because of that design, the similar sound frequencies won't bounce off each other because they are going in different directions. Also, if you notice how Borla will design the ATAK mufflers with different size tubes, holes, etc. on the inside of the mufflers, this is how they eliminate the drone at the muffler area while still producing the aggressive free flowing sound.

I actually went from staggered to unstaggered and was actually better and quieter and even less drone.

I had terrible drone after longtube and off road h-pipe install. The mufflers were chambered MagnaFlows that come with the saleen center exhaust.

After following some threads on this board, I got two m80s and staggered them on to the stock piping. It had helped a lot and reduced drone considerably.

Later I bought the pypes mid muffler kit and because of some fitment issues I couldn't stagger them anymore and just ended up installing them normally (still with the saleen mufflers on them). To my surprise, the car was now quieter and reduced drone even further.

Also, when my resonators were staggered, my exhaust tone had changed to an unpleasant tone. It was just a loud noise when I went full throttle.
