I purchased a used Nikon D5100 off craiglist for $500. It came with the kit 18-55 lens, but also included a nice Nikon 55-200 lens so that made the deal pretty good IMO.

If you don't feel comfortable buying used, I would suggest getting on slickdeals.net and setting up a keyword notification for something like "dslr" or "camera." You can find awesome pricing there, and usually on bundles, which includes several things you will probably need anyway (camera bag, mono/tripod, memory cards, etc). Just be aware that a lot of those 'deals' are gray market items or refurbished units. Research before you buy!

Thanks for the advice

For nighttime and low-light shots, get a tripod. Increase your F/stop to as high a number as possible for maximum depth of field. Decrease your ISO to 100. The resulting combination will require a very long exposure time, but that's what the tripod is for.

That's a great looking image.

I'm considering selling my Canon T4i and the lenses. I just think it is overkill and I really don't use half the features. Does anyone have a recommendation for a nice camera that is for the lack of better words... idiot proof and just works simple? Lol

Get a canon Powershot. There are a few models but you won't gave the lenses to fondle with and it's really just point and shoot.

What lenses do you have? I have a t3i.

I'm on the fence about selling, but I really don't take too many photos to begin with.

Finally got some mustang pics today at Atco during an NHRA race. My panning shots I shoot with my camera in the shutter speed mode with the shutter at 1/160 and these are with my 18-140 kit lens on my Nikon D7100. I wish the normal image hosting sites didn't hurt the image quality... If anyone wants to see them at their best you can check out my flickr page.... https://www.flickr.com/photos/117899079@N03/

Those are really good. Good job on those.

Thanks!

Here is one more shot that I really like from Friday 4/25/14...I did some vignetting to this and it really made the car pop....

And so people can see the original photo before any editing was done in Adobe Lightroom, here's the original....

Love this thread! Really learned a lot skimming through it, thanks for all the advice. Took this photo with my iPhone yesterday and was quite impressed with the quality.

I read they closed the track at 12:30 due to ice sskating conditions

Any pics of a teal notch running the 8.5 class?

Yup...track was junk from the rain yesterday and a ton of pollen...every other car making a pass had to lift during the run. They made the right choice cancelling it today.

As for the teal notch...nope. If I remember correctly it made a pass on the left lane and from where I was taking photos I can only get good shots of the right lane. I was also very jittery due to my kidney meds so I didn't get many good shots. Normally on race days I don't take the medicine because it slows down my reaction time but I actually needed to be slow today..the new valve body has a crazy fast trans brake. The one time shot I made I was .000 on the tree.
