Currently working on selling it to a guy in Italy. He's already paid me half and we are working on logistics now.

If it doesn't work out, I'm still willing to sell the complete engine to anyone who wishes to part it out or use it as it is. I'm not parting it out.

Sold a complete engine to a guy in Italy and found the best way to ship was DHL, ran into issues with FedEx and UPS with hazmat things cause of having had. Fluids in it. Never looked at ocean freight cause he wanted it fast. I think it was almost $2,000 for the shipping. Be careful of hidden costs, taxes and possibly duty.

Good luck

Santi, I'm not worried. Just trying to figure out what to do is all.

And everybody, I must make an apology and clarification. Santi is NOT from Italy, he is from Spain. I apologize for implying that he is an Italian.

Shipping an engine should not be too bad. Remove the fluids, pay a bit extra for insurance, either crate it or skid it and make a skeleton crate so other skids be stacked on it (saves on shipping) An engine weighs what, 600lbs? Ocean freight is very inexpensive and you only pay for minimums. I would say with a standard 48×40 skid with a frame around it would cost around 500-700 ocean with insurance.

^ I was going to build it closer to 36"x36"x36" (motor is about 28"x30"). Should I go that much bigger? Anybody else have any more info on the lumber cert. requirements? Going to ask a couple lumber yards tomorrow.

Most skids should have a stamp that indicates the wood is treated. If you can make the skid smaller you'll save on volume. Most likely this will be rated on weight and not volume transit time via ocean to Italy is rough 25-30 days with no delays from the chandler and the ship. Where are you located?

The issue is that I do not have a skid with a stamp. I need to BUILD one. I have no clue where to find a stamped skid, and even then I would need to add to it to build a cradle for the engine. I'm sorry if I haven't been clear about this before.

Now to make matters worse, Santi has paid me the rest of the money for the engine and I'm still not one step closer to being able to ship it. :ugh1:

Make the whole pallet and box out of plywood or partial board. That way you do not need a special seal of approval, which is only for raw wood.

https://internationalshippingusa.com/ISPM_15_Rules.aspx

Wood packaging supply, even wholly made of wood-based products, such as plywood, particle board, oriented strand board or veneer that have been created using glue, heat and pressure or a combination thereof should be considered sufficiently processed to have eliminated the risk associated with the raw wood. It is unlikely to be infested by raw wood pests during its international shipping. Therefore should not be regulated and restricted by the ISPM 15 rules in your international shipping.

I have three times shipped to Europe this way with no issues

make your dimension lumber from the plywood

Awesome! Thank you, Andrew. Now I can start building the pallet. I can build the 2x4 runners on the bottom out of 3 layers of 3/4" plywood. I'll study your link further after dinner.

Almost all ocean freight is based on volume not weight, A box of air takes up the same space on the ship as box a box the same size of bowling balls.

Try shipping something light but bulky via UPS or FedEx and you get into minimum dimensional weight.

You can actually buy treated and stamped pallets or use plastic pallets.

Shipped a trunk lid to Switzerland, engine to Italy and a driveshaft to France all using this technique.

Good luck

While i'm here I want to mention to Santi that the new oil pan came in today to replace the cracked oil pan on the engine. I'll swap that when I pick up the engine to set it in the new crate that I have to build.
