Hi I'm wondering if anyone has any tips for replacing the A/C Actuator that is behind the cluster on the drivers side on my 2007 GT. I had the dreaded clicking a few months ago so I replaced the actuator that high up on the passenger side. That did NOT get rid of the clicking. I turned the selecter knob to max air and left it there so I wouldn't have to listen to the clicking. Well that worked fine until the other day when I got my car back from the paint shop and they had turn the selector knob to off while working on my car. Now the air ONLY comes out of the Defroster vents no matter where the selector knob is placed so it looks like as much as I tried to avoid with the actuator behind the instrument cluster I now have to tackle it, so any tips tricks ot advice would be helpful.IMG_1775.jpg

It is not that bad, just remove the instrument cluster, and use an Wood block or something else to press in
between the air chanel and dash frame to get some mor clerance.
After that just take loose the wiring and the screw that is most easy to reach, if you cannot losen the other screew just brake the acurator loose (it is much easier to get the screew bak later).
Use something sticky to hold the screews to the socket when remounting them.

The defrost vent actuator is behind the glove compartment on the passenger side, up near the cross-frame. I just replaced it on a '07 with the same issue.

Hi and thanks for you're reply so you say thats the actuator on the pass side up high is the one for the defrost I believe you I do but I've already replaced that actuator. As I said in my original post. After replacing the actuator behind the cross member which was (a bitch let me tell you) I still had the "Clicking" mind you I also still had full function of my selector switch air through my front vents or the floor or wherever I selected. However the clicking spound I heard at that time sounded to me like it was coming from behind the instrument cluster, I wasn't up to tackling another actuator at the time so I switched it over to max air and left it. That worked fine for the time being. I had air through my front vents and I didn't have to listen to that damn clicking. That all changed once I got the car back from the paint shop it seems someone decided to turn the selector switch to OFF so when I got the car back and there wasn't any air coming from the front vents I turned it back to MAX air and whoosh a blast of air from my defrost vent. That being said I've done some research and found that the actuator behind the cluster is called the (Panel / Floor) actuator because it determines where the air goes to the panel i.e.: front vents or to the floor. Also from my research I discovered that the system is meant to default to defrost when a problem occurs. So since I known the cluster actuator hasn't yet been replaced so I'm going to give it a go. I'll see if that fixes my isse if not then I'll take another look at the crossmember actuator which I've already replaced and see if there is another issue there.

If the actuator behind the instrument cluster doesn't solve your problem it could be in the panel switch itself.

YEAH thats another option, I'll definitely have to give that a look if the actuator doesn't fix my problem.

UPDATE OK Guys & Gals here the latest with my HVAC system. I replaced the actuator behind the dash it did NOT fix my problem of only getting air through the defroster vent. I took the thing apart and it DID have a few broken teeth so it needed to be replaced. I then removed the actuator I had already replaced on the passanger side the one thats up high. I took it apart and it was in good condition NO broken teeth. I started the car and then moved the little arm it fits into and tried each setting on the selector dial. The setting on the knob from off turning to the left are face/feet, face only, Max Air. All these setting worked. I then reinstalled the passanger side actuator up high and re-tested. This time NO air when set to face/feet NO air when set to face only I did get air from the front vents when set ot Max Air. So I'm wondering if maaybe I have a bad Vacuum motor does that sound crazy. Based on what I can make of the schematic the vacuum motoros open and close doors that allow the air to go here and there, in just the same way I moved the little arm that the actuator sets in So i'm still in a state of confusion. I then removed the actuator on the passanger side thats down low took it apart found the large white gear broken on shaft. i've ordered this actuator its called the HVAC Heater Blend Door Actuator. I also tested the setting on the right side of hte dial they ALL work. So now ALL my setting work with the exceptions of TWO face/feet and face only on the left side of the dial. I'm going to replace this HVAC Heater blend door actuator and hope it fixes my issues. I'm just so sick and tired of dealing with these fucking actuators and crawling around uncomfortably under this F&^*& dash. if anyones got any ideas I'd love to hear them. Thanks

I am also experiencing this clicking issue. I have read about the blend door actuator as well. Let me know if that solves anything. Haven't taken it apart yet because it's not too loud when i switch functions. Everything still functions as it should but let me know ! Good Luck and thanks!

I don't think I had the actuator arm all the way in the slot when I installed it the first time but this time I known it's locked into the blend door arm. I'll see if this last actuator I order fixes my problem.

****UPDATE 2**** Ok guys I have now installed the new heater blend door actuator (it's the one on the passenger side down low) I used the lines on the back of the actuator which I just recently discover show the (REST POSITION) for the actuator. This however DID NOT fix my problem I still have NO AIR through my front vents when turning the selector to face/feet or face only. I have visually watched the arm of the actuator move the blend door to the correct position as the selector switch is turned. I operated the switch and observed the arm move the blend door so I known this is not the problem. I did also notice that when the selector is turned from either of these positions face/feet or face only there is for a brief second air coming through these front vents. Now if anyone out their can tell why this is I'd be most grateful. I have now replaced three of the four actuators leaving only the recirculate actuator unchanged.

Have you tryed to reset the 0 possision? To do this you only has to put the selector to 0 and remove fuse 10 and 12 from the sjb and turn the ignition on ( with the fuses stil out) for 1 min, then turn the ignition of and reinstall the fuses. If this dos not work I can se no other cause tehen that the acurators has been not corekt mounted, or the controlarms has been bent .

You have 3 of those actuators in in the passenger side.
The one waaaaay up behind the dash is the defrost one, directs air from floor-only, mixed floor/defrost, and defrost only. The electrical connector on this one is on the down-side of the actuator.
Slightly below that is another actuator, mounted somewhat sideways in how the connector comes out.
There's another one but the SJB/fuse box, mounted bottom-up, that controls the fresh air/recycled air flow.

When you replace any of them, you HAVE TO BE SURE the tab in the arm goes into the arm that moves the level for the door. It is very easy to not get this mounted right. (took me a couple hours to get the upper defrost arm and control arm lined up right and connected and fixed; once I was able to shine a light behind the actuator and get the arm aligned right, it went in ok.)
If air is only coming out the defrost vents, that is the defrost control located way up under the dash. See these instructions for how to get to it.

I see this was a while ago but did you ever get this fixed. I found out that there are several different actuators for mustangs and if you don't have the right one it does what yours is doing.
