Ford ProCal/ SCT tune conflict

I recently purchased a 2014 GT from a dealership. I have a few mods I want to add including an SCT X4 tuner. When I try to connect the SCT X4 to change the rear end gear ratio, I get a Vehicle Unsupported. Along with a note that says MGMPBAA* contact technical support.

The issue I ran into is the Mustang has a Ford Performance Power Upgrade Package M-FR1-MGTB. The upgrade came with a ProCal tuner. I do not have the handheld tuner, so I do not have access to the stock tune. I called SCT X4 and after a 45 minute wait they were absolutely no help, they said it has an aftermarket tune and hung up on me.

I called Ford Performance and they said the only way to remove the tune is to have a dealership reflash the PCM. I have been to three Ford Dealerships and the last one was finally able to reflash the PCM (or so they say). I am still getting the same error on the SCT and the detected PCM strategy is the same as it was before MGMPBAA. My PCM is a BLV4 DR3A-12A650-ABE/ DR3A-12B684-BA PN: 5WY8908GFCE.

Has anyone encountered this issue before?

Where did you get the SCT and have u confirmed the strategy code is corrrect for your PCM?

I purchased the SCT handheld used, it is a 7015 Model for Ford vehicles. I verified on SCTs website before purchase to make sure it was compatible with my vehicle. It says the current ECU strategy is MGMPBAA which SCT says is an aftermarket tune. I just had my PCM returned to stock at a dealership today but the ECU strategy did not change.

So the tuner has SCT tunes in it?

If the tuner is telling you that it’s still an aftermarket tune, why not go back to the dealer and clarify

I did, I verified with Ford that it has a Ford Performance Power Pack Upgrade which includes a ProCal tune. For some reason the PCM will not take a stock reflash. After speaking with multiples parties, SCT won't touch it, Ford Dealerships are blaming Ford Performance, Ford Performance insists dealerships should be able to remove tune. I have tried three different dealerships. Do you guys think I might need a new PCM?

I have tried three different dealerships and they all had issues with the PCM not taking the stock tune. The third dealership said they were able to do it after a few attempts but the strategy code is still the same on the vehicle information that gets pulled up on the X4. It appears to me that they were unsuccessful.

Sounds like the Strategy code needs to be updated in the Tuner. I would contact SCT again and let them know that last bit of info.

Since you bought the SCT tuner used are you sure the SCT tuner isn’t married to another car? I know that if the tuner is married to another car you will not be able to download or adjust anything on your car with the tuner. However SCT should help you identify this issue and offer to clear the tuner for you if you send it back. It will cost you to do this but then you’d know the tunerbis good to go.

The tuner is unmarried with unlocks left. It just says unsupported vehicle.

To me it sounds like an issue with the X4. I had the same thing happen with an Xcal2. Unlocked it from my old car and it showed as unmarried any time I checked on the device or with the software. But when I tried to use it to load a tune in my new car it kept looking for my old car. Ended up picking up a used X3.

That being said, as long as the strategy is correct in the hand held it shoulder care what tune is in the ECU. It'll just store that tune in the spot for the stock tune.

It is from Ford Performance. Its one of their power packages. It came with a re-usable filter, GT500 mufflers, FRPP oil filter, and a ProCal loaded with a Ford Performance tune. The main issue I'm running into is that all the dealerships I take it to acknowledge that the PCM has an aftermarket Ford Performance tune (Ford dealerships and Ford Performance are two separate entities according to both parties) and that the PCM is not allowing them to upload the stock or as-built Ford Tune. All three dealerships and Ford Performance have acknowledged that the PCM is not responding normally to the IDS program. They can locate the vehicle by using the VIN number in the Ford database but the VCM says there is no PCM. They have to force a reflash. So I would assume that if it was an issue with the SCT X4 why would the dealerships be unable to load the stock tune. After reading through several threads about PCM logic, it appears that there could be an issue with the PCM. I have purchased a brand new PCM that arrived yesterday. I have an appointment this coming Tuesday to install the as-built tune and attempt to program with the SCT X4. If no luck, I will test the SCT X4 on my buddies 2011 and see if it will acknowledge his Mustang.

The tune is the pre-configured tune from SCT.

The issue has been resolved. It turned out to be the PCM module. I had to involve Ford, Ford Performance, and SCT engineering. After digging into the PCM deeper it was found that the stock Ford tune had been replaced with a ProCal/Ford Performance aftermarket tune. Then after it appears that someone else tried to force a "Roush" aftermarket tune (I can only assume it was another previous owner of the car that was trying to get rid of the ProCal tune but did not have access to the tuner from the original owner). This action apparently bricked a certain section of the PCM that controlled its ability to communicate properly with the IDS program. The PCM was able to control the car but the car ran roughly (even the stock tune woke up the car compared to whatever this PCM was attempting to do). I had to purchase a new PCM. I found a Ford Dealership on eBay that was selling overstock items and managed to score a brand new in box PCM for $200 shipped. The dealership charged me $125 dollars to install and reflash to the stock tune. As soon as the new PCM was installed the IDS system was able to upload the stock as built tune with not issue. I connected my SCT X4 and was able to download and back up the stock tune, make my adjustments and upload the SCT tune with no issues. It only took $450 and 5 trips to the dealerships over a three week period to return my car to the stock tune. I appreciate the input guys!
