No way to put any type of auto / manual transmission on a diesel train..with 1 mile of coal cars behind it. Hence the diesel driving a 3 phase AC generator, which in turn powers the electric motors. When going down hills, the electric motors now become generators....and they dump the electrical load via rows of nichrome bar, load resistors, up on the roof, and a myriad of contactors. Air brakes slow down the rest of the train.
Because - you know - I claimed that. Exactly.

I know how Diesel-Electric Locomotives work. Do you know how non-sequiturs work?

Well hell, since we are bragging about licenses, I have been certified in plant railway switch engines since about 2000. I drove a 1948 GM diesel/electric switch engine for a few years. Lotta fun starting those up, you don’t just go turn the key lol

It is also incorrect. This is not the 1850s.

(just an FYI - I have held a high-pressure Stationary Steam Power Operator’s License since 1994, and a Class II Boiler Engineer License since 1998 - among other Professional Licenses)

Here is you opportunity to share your knowledge and educate me! Where else is steam used today besides nuclear power?

Since this thread is about efficiency and eco friendly propultion, I am limiting the definition of "steam power" in this discussion to propultion of a vehicle.

Just how efficient is modern steam power and what is it used for today?

Not sure where nuke submarines and nuke battleships fit in here. lol Electric, and steam/nuke. So lets stick to land vehicles.

This is awesome
Mopar had a gas turbine car engine in the late 50's. Sorta like a mini turbo prop. I think Leno has one.
Leno also has a steam car.... "stanley steamer". Think it ran on coal /wood/propane. It was on TV one night, he got it up to 75 mph on the LA freeway.. before being pulled over by the CHP.

Mess and weight I am not sure on I can tell you it takes up about 75% of the underside of the vehicle. Replacement cost for the battery is about 56000.00. Crazy!
I mentioned this price on another forum and it's getting push back.
Can you verify that the replacement cost of the battery is $56,000 and not $5,600 .
Thanks for the feedback.

Warranty price on battery is about 56000.00. Sounds insane but that is the price.
