I have a 2011 Mustang GT that the rear and is making a knocking noise over bumps. It was at Ford and they said I need new rear shocks and control arms. They want to charge almost $2000 to fix it which I feel is pretty expensive.

I have a decent amount of experience working on cars, I replaced the front and rear suspension in my '65 Mustang fastback. I'm thinking of doing it myself to save on the labor.

Usually when I'm buying parts, I put in my VIN and it will tell me the parts for my particular vehicle. When I do it for the rear suspension parts, I get five or six rear shock options and two or three rear lower control arm options. All of them indicate the 2011 GT would be an appropriate fit.

How do I know exactly which ones I have in my car?

Secondly, I do not take it to the track. It's just a car that I drive recreationally for fun. It only has 40,000 miles on it. I do like to drive it fairly aggressively though.

That said, I don't need a track suspension or lowering or anything crazy. Am I better off just replacing it with the stock suspension parts from Ford or should I go with a mild aftermarket upgrade?

Lastly, if I have to replace the rear shocks and control arms, should I replace the front shocks as well? What about the springs and upper control arms?

Any recommendations on a nice setup that will give a little extra performance but still provide Street comfort?

I would go with aftermarket parts tbh. Can't go wrong with BMR, UPR, Whiteline suspension parts.

For the shocks, a standard replacement you can get from rockauto would be fine, go with Koni if you want to upgrade a little. I would do the front's as well. If the rear's are worn out, then the front ones are as well more than likely.

Ok thanks. I figured the same for the shocks.

My opinion based on my experience:
Absolutely get aftermarket rear lower control arms. Huge improvement in axle control with near zero increase in NVH. A must have on this chassis for me.
For a street car at stock ride height, stick with the stock upper arm. I installed an aftermarket one a while after I did the lowers. It made very little additional improvement while causing a significant increase in NVH.
Spend the money on good shocks/struts. I bit the bullet and went with Bilsteins on someone else's recommendation. I don't remember how much I paid for them but I do remember being mad at myself for not doing it the day I got the car.

Definitely go aftermarket. The stock rear control arms leave a lot to be desired on these cars. Aftermarket ones would be a big improvement. Sounds like a good time to do struts, coils, shocks, and rear control arms. I did UPR rear control arms, bilstein shocks, UPR rear control arms, and GT500 strut top mounts and really love the ride comfort and handling the car has, plus the stance is perfect to me. Rides smooth but still corners better, feels much more planted, and stays straighter during hard launches with lots of wheels speed.

We have set our customers up with this same combo and they also love it.
