I’ve dealt with a lot of rust in my days, but this rustang suspension is getting the best of me.

How on earth do you guys deal with the rusty suspension bolts aside from cutting them out?

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get out these swaybar bolts?

They’ve been soaking in pb blaster for a day and I’m just worried it will just snap off and then I’m dealing with that now too.

Heat is your friend. Heat the nut with a torch until red and quench with water. The nut will come right off. Yes it will melt the bushing but I assume you are replacing it anyway.

Haha yes, I will provably hose down the under of the car before I torch anything.

I was thinking the same thing. If he tried to loosen the bolt, the flange nut would swing around to the other side, no?
Exactly .... but no reason to be ashamed. I once did the opposite on my Mercedes, there you have to turn the nut, because the bolt has internal notches, which I sheered off by turning it.

Yes I was trying to loosen the head of the bolt not the flange nut. Thats why I was not wanting to have it break off that would just be a very bad day.
Does anyone know size or what the part number is for these bolts? I clearly need to replace them. Hell does anyone have list of all the bolts? I dont want to reuse any of this rusted crap.

Uh a Sunday morning mystery, I like that.

The bolt is a 10,9, they rust, but not as fast as lower grade alloys. It should turn with a breaker bar.

Option 1: The owner before over torqued the bolt, squeezed and bend everything together and damaged the threads.

Option 2: The metal sleeve of the bushing is probably made from aluminum alloy (?) and has corroded. Al2O3 is one of the hardest crystal on earth, together with the increase of volume, it can be impossible to turn the bolt inside it. Oil will not go to it and the bushing will protect it from heat. German cars have this problems a lot. 10.9 bolts in aluminum control arms. Audi with the "asshole bolt", Mercedes with the rear suspension arms.

I would try to turn it from both sides. Unfortunately if it is is option 2, if you snap off the nut the bolt will not come out.

Good luck ;)

put a wire wheel on a grinder , and clean the hell out of the threads and nut to make them as shiny as can be,, get the bolt head as well,,
spray with pb blaster ,,
a good impact,, and a 6 or 8 point shallow socket

my harbor fright impact not only snaped off the weld nuts on the power steering rack ..

but was also able to get all my rear end axle and suspension bolts out

Had to do this on my son's car. Quickest way to get that out is to use a cutoff wheel on the nut side. Then a round punch and hammer to tap it out. You're going to have to replace that hardware anyway. Be careful not to cut the mount on the body side. There are no threads to worry about on the body side so once you cut the nut off the rest of the bolt should come out easily. Have a spray bottle with water on hand in case things get hot.

I have the Earthquake XT from harbor freight and it has some phenomenal torque for the price. At the time I got it it had one of the highest torque ratings in reverse in that price range.
