Bushing removal and installation.

Hi everyone, my name is Russell and I am new to this forum I'm 72 years old. Back in the day I had a 65 Mustang that I raced and I also had a 66 Mustang Fastback that I raced. Kids came along put it into all that. Finally kids got grown and in 2008 I bought a Mustang GT convertible California Special. So now to my question. I had to replace the rear upper control arm bushing which took me about a week to get out. Finally got it out I could not find a specialized tool to remove this bushing or to put it back in I got it out but I'm putting it back in I damaged it. So now I got to take it back out is there a specific tool or does anybody have any hints on the way that I could get this out I need a specialized tool I've heated it I Frozen the bushing in the freezer like they say. I just need some help on this matter please my car's been down for a month any advice would be appreciated thank you very much. Russell

I have not done a S197 but have done plenty of suspension bushings. Usually a puller/pusher and/or a press is needed. I am sure someone else who’s done them has a trick or two.

if your talking about the rear upper on the rear,, you should do what i opted to do,

rather then try to press the old one out,, this one uses the outter sleeve from the stock one inplace,,,

you hollow out the center then you use your hands and press this together ,, no tools, easy as pie

Another option if you're tired of fighting with the bushing is to just replace the Upper control arm.
I think he's talking about the bushing on the diff. housing.

@whitmanink, now that the metal sleeve of the bushing is out, replacing just the rubber isn't an option. Unfortunately, if all my assumptions are correct, the right bushing tool will be needed.

Yea unfortunately now you gotta get a tool and press a new one in ..

if only you would have came on here and asked if there is an easier way to go about this before doing it, ,
but cant say i havent been there a time or ten lol

I would buy a tool kit and sell it again.
Not sure if this is the right one (biggest problem I would have is to tighten the bolts on ride height)

I use a hole saw & drill the rubber right out. Then take a chisel & hammer & punch a crease in it & it pops right out. Take a socket our metal sleeve & hammer the new on in. Be sure & clean the housing out with a wire brush on a drill so it slides in easier.

I installed a new UCA w/ a poly bushing rather than fight with the upper bushing. The differential bushing I removed with hole cutter and a cup brush on a drill. IIRC, a 1 1/4" hole cutter would be about right.

Once you have the old dif bushing out, installing a new poly one is easy.

Same as others, I've used a hole saw drill bit, or even a longer 1/4" drill bit, and drilled around the center bushing to break away the rubber area. Knock out the center with a hammer. Once out, clean out the remaining rubber; a good stiff drill-mounted wire brush bit works good. Once the inner bushing rubber is removed, install the 2-piece replacement. Be sure to lube with provided lubricant. It can be a challenge to get the uca arm over the bushing; I use an all-thread 3/8" rod with flat washers to squeeze/hold the bushing together and get the uca arm over the edge, then remove the all-thread clamp.
