hey guys,

I was looking around and I came across the newly released pypes Long tube headers for the s197 GT. I am curious to know if anyone has run these as of yet and what they think of them? if possible what there dyno gains have been with these headers.

Also should stainless steel headers be jetcoated or okay without?

While the L/T's and new mid pipe are going in is there anything else i should do or get done such as welded bungs and what not? if so how many and where should i get them put in?

what about 02 sensors?

here is a link to the headers
http://www.latemodelrestoration.com/iwwida.pvx?;item?item_no=PYP-HDR55S 1&comp=LRS

I was thinking of running these with the pypes catted h pipe.... not sure though as ive heard of pypes having fitment issues with their exhausts.

I know i asked a lot of questions but I would like to do it right the first time around.

thanks a bunch people!

If the quality of their long tubes is anything like the quality of their midpipes, I'd say avoid those headers at all costs.

interesting comment. thanks for the input... i mean does pypes just make bad quality stuff or stuff that is bad fitting? there is a key difference there... i mean bad fitting can always be a pita but something that can be done... bad quality is just bad quality!

Their exhaust systems sound good, but they tend not to fit very well. I had to have my hangers re-welded on my Violators and have heard nightmare stories with the Mid-Muffler system.

I'd probably avoid their headers personally. That would suck pure balls to finish that mod and realize that it doesn't fit properly.

I'm sure I'll be in the minority on this topic, but my Pypes O/R h-pipe fits perfect. The only thing I didn't like was the cheapo clamps, but that's not unique to Pypes.

They make low cost, leaky pile of shit midpipes. Their offroad H-pipes come in four pieces, for pete's sake, so you have to weld them together. There are some of us that can't get a good seal on manifolds, period. The fit is just bad, and I doubt they'd ramp up their quality control for headers.

I'm happy to see someone with a brand name making medium-cost long tubes, though. The Kooks and ARH marketing machines have brainwashed the community to think that their 3v headers should be $1200 whereas all other models are a third of the price. All for some bent steel pipes. So any money out of their pockets is fine with me.

To answer your other questions, yes you should get them coated. These things get H-O-T and keeping that heat away from other components is good. Also, you will most definitely need O2 extensions for your rear O2 sensors, since having long tubes moves all of that aft.

Also note: you'll need a midpipe that works with these headers. The Pypes offroah H they sell to idiots like me for stock applications probably won't work with these.

Their mid-muffler system was poorly designed and didn't fit for shit. I'll echo what others have said - stay away from Pypes.

im just not sure which headers to go with... i was reading the 5.0 magazine review they did on 7 different headers and the two that came out up top in terms of gains was kooks and mac (23 rwhp gain for both, rest were around 17.5)... but the mac headers i realized only sell them only in 1 3/4" and im looking to say N/A with this car (or atleast forced to for a long time) and was told the 1 5/8" would be best.

im just confused, lol... i mean there are so many options... the one thing i have limited my self to is a catted H pipe.... I will not deviate from that for many reasons.

anybody got any suggestions which headers then to go with catted h pipe?

I have MAC boomtubes right now and im thinking with LT's and catted h pipe it might get too loud with them so i might need new axlebacks too, lol.

any help is apprecaited... newbie to these kind of mods ya know.

Jay, don't limit yourself to just commercially available H-pipes. You can weld in cats or resonators (to quiet things down) as you see fit.

Bad fitting is poor quality control.
IMHO, I wouldn't use a header from a company that can't even get mid pipes to fit properly.

Kooks expensive or not have been building the best headers for a long time now. They seem to be popular with the S197 crowd and for good reason Kooks and ARH (ex-employee related) make the most power hands down with unmatched quality and fitment. Plus Kooks catted x and h pipes have a great quality cat with excellent placement plus they come with the 02 extenders ( Just the truth not advertising they don't pay me) I've installed numerous long tubes on S197's, LS motors just did a new ZR-1 and they fit perfect no complaints and have never once had a customer complain with Kooks, the others not going to mention any names I can't same the same unforunately. I can't provide any info to you about Pypes long tubes, I don't like to comment about products I personally haven't worked with. The Pypes makes an inexpensive alternative but with that, well how do say; you get what you pay for. And I leave it at that. Good Luck

I wouldn't be afraid of the 1.75 headers. I have them and they scream. I'm probably leaving a bit of torque on the table, but I doubt it would be noticeable.

For what you want, I'd go with the JBA setup or Kooks, depending on your budget. That's what I would have done if I could do it all over again.

I have had great experience with Pypes.....Their X-pipe's are far from none when it come's to quality....The 3 piece design of their x's is awesome....Yeah, their mid-muffler setup isn't great....but look at their mufflers, and x-pipe's....to each their own...

thanks. i checked out the prices on american racing ones.... and i would definitely go with the kooks over them for sure.

I wonder if i could get a custom fabricated h pipe locally and then weld in cats like the slps ones... hmm... just dunno how much something like that would cost.

i guess lots of options can be confusing... but better then limited options....

I was told by someone in exactly this way:" kooks is the like cadillac of exhausts" .... i guess its true, lol.

i guess i just have to muster up the $$$ and go high end then.

i know yours scream!!!... ive seen your vids with the pypes violators i think it was and the headers.

i think again the pricing is so close with the jba's i would rather go kooks.

how do the bbk's hold up among this crowd in comparison to the ones mentioned.

what is your car making at the wheels anyways bigwilly?

If the Pypes Longtubes are of low quality, they can't be any worse than Boost Brothers Longtubes. :p
