I always use the Motorcraft, as it is cheap and recommended as an OEM replacement. I heard the Mobil 1 filters are supposed to be better, but I haven't seen any data to prove it. I am always up for trying new things and I do have a lab here to analyze my oil if needed.

I always use Mobil 1 oil filters for safe measure.

i was always under the impression that its better to go with a little less oil than too much...(the extra oil has to go somewhere...)

Mobil 1, K&N and RP filters are all made by Champion Labs. They are the exact same filter.

I thought the 5-20 was used because the phasers need a lighter oil to work properly. But that's the 5w part isn't it. What does the 20 part mean and how does it compare to 40. Yes yes.. Search. But my question about the light oil for the phasers to work right, any truth to that?

Think I read it on here but it was something along the lines that if you're FI then you should run thicker oil. Whats up with that.

the 5w-20 has a lot to do with CAFE.

5w-30/10w-30 are just fine

HEY ALL New to this forum n saw the discussion... Just wanted to let everyone know that the Saleen S281 Supercharged Owners Manual Calls for 5W30 even though the Ford manual & the oil cap says 5w20... Guess the 30 weight helps protect against extra heat caused by boost

so i get a bit of information outta this, but whats the deal with the second number in oil ratings? can i get away with 5-40?

First number is cold weight. Second number is hot weight (210F). A 0W-30 oil has the same viscosity as an SAE 30 oil at 210F.

You can use any oil that you like. Just remember, a 5w-40 oil is going to be thicker at operation temp, which leads to less mpg. However, thicker oils generally take longer to break down in high heat and coat a little better. For me, I use 0w-30 in the winter, and 10w-30 in the summer.

I fought a long argument on another Mustang forum about this topic. So many people were giving out incorrect information that you have to use 5w-20 or it could damage your engine. I had to educate them about the meaning of the numbers and why you can use other oils. I stick with 0w-30. Better fuel economy and less resistance. When I start autox, I will probably go for some 5w-30 or 5w-40.

LOL. Guess what the Mustangs sold in Europe are spec'd to use? 5w30! :roflmao:

Point of intrest, Mazda runs the same filter as us for some of their cars. My friend works at a Mazda dealer and I have him change my oil and check the under side for $12 and I supply the oil and filter and he showed me that. No I couldn't put one on. I use a Motorcraft.

5w-30 Amsoil is what I run. You won't find it at Autozone or Advanced, but NAPA usually has it on the shelf. Mobil 1 filter is all I run as well as some of the others in this thread.
