Quick question for the guys running 4.56s...

Im getting ready for the install here in the next week or two. I have the ring and pinion setup...I know I need the master rebuild kit, but I am told that I will also need a notched differential cross pin for the 4.56s, is this true. If so which one did you guys use, i believe its the 7/8" Notched Diff Cross pin for the 31 splines that go in our cars correct?

Also would you recommend going with the Ford Racing Traction Lock-Rebuild kit with the carbon discs while I have everything out? Thanks for replies in advance.

Yes you will need a notched pin... Richmond makes one for $20 I think. I didn't end up needing on because of the spool. I would rebuild the posi since it's out.

Ok I'll contact Richmond about the cross pin. LRS carries them for $39.99, and I'll need the 31 spline correct?

And it sounds like you recommend the carbon disc upgrade if I reading that correctly. I plan in staying with the stock diff for the moment

I don't know if they make a huge differnce over the stock clutch packs I ran 1.60 sixty foots for awhile on the stock posi and packs but the carbon are just a hair more in price I would go for the carbon. The pin won't make a differnce 31 spline or not makes no differnce for the posi

the shop that installed my 4.56 gears the first time machined the stock pin to fit. now i use a trutrack which doesn't use the pin.

Yeah you can machine the pin to fit. You just notch it. But I figure I would just order the pin to ensure it's machined properly.

I will be doing the install myself with a couple friends. Should be fairly easy. Just want to make sure I have all the right parts when it comes time for install

It doesn't make a difference? The 28 spline runs a 3/4" pin and the 31 spline runs a 7/8" pin... It doesn't affect it despite the different sizes?

Do you still have the stock 3.73s's in there now?
Man 4.56 is alot gear!
I'm a gear head...and 4.30 was tight for me 4.10's is the sweet spot.
And yes I have a set of 4.30's for sale with less than 50 miles on them.

I have the 4.56s sitting in my shop now. Just ordered the notched pin and rebuild kit.

Yes, the 3.73s are in the car now, dont really care for the performance N/A, they are a sluggish gear for my setup.

Im a huge gearhead and 4.56s are the way to go for a monster N/A setup on these cars

Did you order the GT500 install kit or the standard GT ?

The Bullitt and GT500 come from the factory with a HI-TQ inner bearing.
It's a bit larger in diameter and use's a shim behind the race to fit the housing.
It's also about $30 more than the standard kit.
It can also confuse a novice installer, either kit will work in all S197 8.8 axles.

So how come people just use regular GT install kits on built cars instead of the GT500 high torque inner pinion bearing?

Maybe some dont know the difference, some save the $30 ?
The standard kit has been working for years with lots of built motors....

I just don't see the point in having a "forged"(per say) inner pinion bearing when the "standard" timken bearings work just fine. And I really feel its just a load of crap, even though I know they do exists.

Well I originally wanted 4.56s in my car and then a tr6060 and lastly go with a Kenne Bell but now this got me thinking... maybe go with 4.30s.

If you plan on staying N/A then a 4.30 or 4.56 is a good aggressive gear.

I wouldnt go much higher than a 4.10 with the boost. Traction is already a bitch as it is.
