FB Performance is a great place to buy from and the Customer Service is 2nd to none. I am running their version of a 4R70W they dub 4STB-E. Go check their website and it has pricing for everything. They also build some stout TH400's but I am insure if they have the proper mounts to make it plug and play for our cars. Give Mike a call and he can steer you in the right direction.

I beat on this 4STB-E with over 700 rwhp and it never gave me a single problem. I had a best of 10.3@137 with it and have about 20 passes on it along with 1000 miles on the street.

At that power level go with a 4R70W good to about 1100 HP.
The TH 400 is beefy & heavy.
I have the Lentech 4R70W with manual valve body & transbrake,i have had it for 2 + years & have made 450 passes with no problems.Call Len & talk to him he holds patents on the 4R70W valve body & has a lifetime deductible warranty on the trans.Tell him you were talking to Randy from Ontario. www.mounceracing.com www.lentechautomotive.com

I would second FP Performance. I compared Lentech and FB before making my purchase. I think both are good but I liked the options I could get on the FB over the Lentech and was really impressed at the help Mike and Fred from FB gave me over the phone. I have run a best of 10.645@127 and I know there is more in it. I am shooting for 10.0x this coming year.

It all depends on what you plan with the car. If you are going to street drive it then the 4R70W would be a much better choice because of the o/d capability. The TH400 is a stronger trans then the 4R70W but it will also be more difficult to work with. You will need special adapters for the case to mate it to the mod motor and getting the speedometer and such to work correctly would be almost impossible. With the power levels you are talking about I think the 4R70W would overall be a much better choice and will handle those power levels just fine.

4R70W is going to be the most practical with your hp level. It's the easiest swap and it will work well on the street as well as the track. I think if you were building a 900 hp-plus all out racer then I'd consider going with the TH400. You would need driveshaft, spacer plate, flex plate, convertor, cooler, lines, crossmember, electrical connectors, shifter, cable, re-program the pcm to manny type and a few odds and ends. There are several people here on this board that have done this swap.

I probably only have about 300 RWHP (never been on a dyno) and I run a TH350. I have a used 4r sitting in my garage that I was going to have rebuilt and installed but decided to go with the TH350 due to cost. I paid $700 for a Marco Abruzzi built TH350. I then bought an Ultra Bell for $350 and flex plate for $200. An Abruzzi 4000RPM converter for $400. Built a cross member myself. Had a DS built for $200. Shifter was $200 and I got the cooler for free from a friend. In all I have about $2000 into the conversion. My car started out manual so there was no special tuning. I use a GPS unit as a speedometer. I have 4.56 gears and do drive it on the road. It's mainly driven to the track and back with very little driving other than that. I went this route for cost. The 4r valve body and and torque converter would have been a little under the total TH350 conversion. I race the car every weekend in the summer and my concern with the 4r was if something did go wrong with it, I'm down until someone rebuilds it. With the TH350, I can pretty much call Marco on Monday and have a new trans Wednesday and install it before the weekend.

If anybody wants a used 4r70w, I have one sitting in my garage. I'll sell it for $150 plus shipping!

You live in Maryland its not that far, just arrange to drive up with it & have it done & be on your way back the same day & learn lots to boot.

I took mine direct to him 6 hours away from me,i watched them tear it down, hot wash, replaced output shaft, added extra band to 1st & final, increased line pressure,re assembled & tested on engine dyno, all within 5 hours & i was on my way home. These guys know there stuff & offer warranty on a racing trans,no one else does.Sorry to hear you had a bad experience with them.

Oh man to bad you did not take it up there & watch.I was amazed at the amount of parts & pieces. The guy put it all back together while talking to me like he was making a coffee.I have alot of respect for these guys. The 2 guys Len has there are very well trained on these trannys, they have been there for many years.I find if i want things done in a resonable time i just deliver myself & pickup.I do this with most of my raceing stuff. The border is a pain in the ass,no punn intended hahahah.

I just did my th400 swap and it does take some custom work to make fit, but not bad if you can fabricate. The transmission crossmember will need to be fabricated, but it is real simple. You can also use the speed sensor and reluctor that was used on the 88-90 trucks with electric speedometers. The reluctor is a 40 tooth while the stock manual trans reluctor is 12 tooth, so the speedo reads 3.3 times as fast. The speedo can be corrected in the tune though so no worries there. I'm just waiting on my driveshaft to drive it around and then I'll probably make a thread about my swap and what I did to give some more insight.
