I have the opportunity to buy a new GT500 5.4L motor and 6 speed tranny from a dealership for $12k. If this ends up being more expensive than building up my 3v and throwing on a KB I will turn down the deal. At the same time I'm afraid if I pass this up I might not come across a deal this good again. Which ever is cheaper is my main concern. My question is if I buy the motor and tranny would I need anything else to install this in my 07 GT with a 5speed. I called a speed shop and they said I would need the coolant hoses which cost over a $1000. That sounds to high for coolant hoses. Is this true? Is there anything else I will need? I was told it comes with a wire harness.

I would build up the GT for that amount of money and smoke gt500's all day long. If you can take the engine out and put it back in that will be 2K you save. Find some good local engine builders to upgrade yours and buy and SC then hunt for the best tuner you can get too.

Your going to spend alot of time and money getting it to work, but it would be unique, I would just spend the money on a 1000hp 3v myself

Is'nt the GT500 pretty much a built motor that can take any abuse you could throw at it? a Fully built and blown 3v motor plus a 6spd tranny would certainly cost more than $12k, no? Plus, one would have 5.4 liters and DOHC AND a 6spd. That motor does not sound like a bad deal at all. I guess I'll wait for a fully built, blown and 6spd member to chime in for this one.

I had Livernois quote me for a built 4.6 stroked to 5.0 with a whippleHO. They said about $13,500 installed. However, they also said that unless I got a new clutch, tranny and driveshaft the existing stuff would just break. Total out the door for about 700hp at the rear wheels on 93 octane (headers ,exhaust, etc) would be close to $20k. I figured better to sell my 05 and spend the $20k +/-on an upgrade to a GT500, less work and more long term value and potential.

Having just completed a swap for a friend...I'd say BUILD YOURS!! Much nickel and dime expense and WAY to much hassle!

not worth the trouble for the 5.4 when you can get a built short block for 3,200 and port and polish your stock heads.

plus the stock eaton that the GT500 comes with is pretty small you can get the blow zilla if you wanted a TS and still spend less and make WAY more power

he'll, if you just want to be able to beat stock gt500's just get any sc and do some suspension parts(you didn't hear me say that don). Anyway I thing stock gt500's are making 430ish to the wheels. You can get that from your stock motor and more with a good tune and be 500lbs lighter. Then forge later when your ready.

If it were me, I'd get that engine and transmission and then start looking for GT500 body parts to build one.

Sooner or later there will be wrecks that you may be able to get and add front or back clips etc. and go from there.

That may be a "cheap" way to own a real GT500.

JMHO of course.

+1 good advice although that is a good deal for the motor and trans

Cost of install aside, because your paying that either way, I think you add a built long block, with a sick blower, I my case a ported Saleen Series VI with the JDM plenum and a small NOS kit to boot, and have the Tremec built by Bob Hanlon you good to 1000 HP. Then you flip you motor to recoop some of the cost, you in the same ball park.

IF you go with the GT500 5.4 you have to swap the wiring, K member, accessories, Trans member, DS and your still adding a 450 HP witha 6 speed at the end of the day. Now if you were planning to throw in the 3.4L whipple and bump it to 700 that will get you up there HP wise but then your up at 15 grand ish, plus you need exhaust upgrades and clutch and stuff.

If all you looking for is 450-500 HP, just add a twin screw and get 500 hp for half the cost.

Stick to the three valve. If you've got 12K to spend you can put a serious hurt on ANY GT500 on the planet.

Yea any ""STOCK"" GT500. I have a friend with Whippled GT500 and it is no joke. If you buy that motor save up for a while slap a big ass Whipple on it, you're set with a 9sec car, fully streetable a/c and all, plus the DOHC heads AND 6spd. No matter how you look at it or slice it, a 3v 4.6 even stroker 5.0 does not have as much potential as the 4v 5.4. I'm in no way saying that a 3v can't get up to 1000rwhp in race format, but what i am sayign if you do mod for mod the 5.4 DOHC WILL get you more power simply in reference for CFM of the heads and tuning capabilities. But i guess i'm just a power hungry kinda guy.:piano:

Sounds like I might stay with the 3V and build it. I want around 650RWHP but I dont want to spend $20K doing it. Modular Depot quoted me between $19k to $22k for a fully built motor and a Kenne Bell, clutch and fuel system. They even siad I might want a new built tranny bring the total to around $22K to $25K. Correct me if Im worng I was thinking about it last night and if I get the motor and tranny and sell my motor and tranny for maybe $3K. That brings the total cost to $9K throw a 2.8L KB or 3.4L Whipple and that is another $4K bringing the total to $13K. I wont need to get another transmission since the 6 spd is capable of handleing that power. I have a brand new set of Kooks LT and x pipe that brenspeed said I can trade in for the GT500 version so that is covered. Just trying to save $$$$.

Some motivation

man, that seems expensive to me anyways! 19k-22k for a built motor? you already have the block, you just need forged internals and a builder! Talk to Larry H on here about that and save even more money. Just my :2cents:
