Anyone ever mount the CS scoop rearward?

Just wondering if anyone has ever tried putting the factory Cal Special hood scoop on their car facing the windshield. I'm looking for a way to make a functional heat extractor on my hood, and I'd like it to have a subtle appearence as if it was done by the factory rather than something that stands out as an obvious mod.

I'm just not sure if the scoop would look weird if it were mounted backwards.

Just so you know the hood scoop isnt functional even in the first place.

A cowl hood would work wonders and look good. Tried and tested method.:thumb2:

well. as you would have to cut your hood to make the hood scoop functional in the first place why not just buy the 2010 gt500 vent heat extractor and put it in your hood looks pretty sweet IMO..
that is assuming you don't want to spend the money to buy another hood.

The base of the windshield is a high pressure area. Any vent back there would be useless and act as intakes not vents. The best place for a vent is where the 2010 GT500 has it, a low pressure area with high speed air drawing air from under the hood. Many people have successfully installed the 2010 GT500 vent on their 2005/2009 GT hoods looks good and works good. It is far enough forward that rain doesn't pool on the engine too. Tiger Racing makes a killer vented hood if you want to change hoods.

i do agree but he may be trying to make it look like the scoop from the firebirds or something.
This is sort of the look I had in mind when I thought of this idea.

The base of the windshield is a high pressure area. Any vent back there would be useless and act as intakes not vents.
That was a concern I had, but cowl induction scoops are placed within a few inches of the windhield to take advantage of that high pressure area, I was hoping the CS scoop was far enough forward of the windshield that it wouldn't be affected by that, but that was just a guess since I haven't the seen the actual wind tunnel testing Ford would have done on the '05-'09 bodies to know just how far forward that high pressure area extends.

As far as the other suggestions, comments go; I already considered an aftermarket hood, but wanted to explore an option that would be much less expensive before I commit to spending the $600+ of replacing my hood. I've seen used oem CS scoops on ebay for $100-$150, so even with having a shop paint it to match my car it is still alot cheaper than replacing the entire hood. And yes, I do know the CS scoop is not functional from the factory, but cutting a small hole in the hood and cutting whatever else in the scoop that's needed to open up a path for air flow is an easy enough project.

I did mention I was hoping to keep the look of this mod subtle, and subtle definitely isn't a custom hood or 2010 GT500 vent - LOL. No offense to those that have that, it does look great, it's just not what I want for the look on my car.

This may be a Mustang forum, but that T/A is a sweet looking ride, it was also the hottest car that everyone wanted when I was in high school so it will always be a favorite of mine

Used to own a 78' pretty much that exact same car...those are for air induction...not really heat extraction. I believe the idea originated because they were wondering about getting water etc into your intake. So essentially it is a shaker hood backwards.

Hmmm baby cowl hood?
Doesn't a cowl hood suck hot air out from under the hood as the air passes above it?
That high pressure area creates a vacuum underneath it, or at least that's what I learned on the discovery channel.

It's a science I don't quite get just yet..... I know some cowl hoods feed air into the scoop, that was the 1st application of it that I know of and was used on the late 60's Camaro and Chevelle on their cowl induction hoods. The high pressure area at the base of the windshield forced air forward into the scoop opening. Just recently tho, I was reading about the Steeda cowl hood from their '05-'09 'stangs and the description stated how effective it was at reducing underhood temps, the only thing is it didn't say if that temp reduction came from sucking hot air out or forcing outside air into the cowl opening. I got the impression it was sucking hot air out thru the cowl. The biggest difference I can see between these 2 examples is the angle of the windshield, the new 'stangs windshields have a much sleeker angle compared to any car from the 60's. Hell, just look at the '78 T/A pic in this thread, the windshield looks damn near vertical by comparison.

I'm not opposed to a cowl hood, but as I said I'm going for a very subtle look on my car, not something that stands out and is immediately noticable that my car has a modded hood. I like the "power dome" from the '10-'11 hood, it's like a mini cowl scoop in appearence. I've been searching the aftermarket scoops but so far I haven't seen anything similar to that yet.

idk how cowls work on EFI cars, but cowls used to be used on carb'd cars to feed air into the carb. the low pressure area at the back of the cowl would suck fresh air up under the hood and then into the carb. i have trouble believing they'd perform well as heat extractors since air would be moving into the cowl and not out of it

On that particular set-up there is a seal there under the hood, and the opening only opens to the air cleaner, nowhere in the motor, that is why it doesnt act like a heat extractor. in theory yours would work but a cowl would work better

If you reversed the scoop the holes wouldnt line up, obviously. Youd have a lot of extra fab work and painting to do to fill and create new holes. AND its not neccessarily a guarantee that the curvature of the scoop would work with the hood, reversed.
