Issues with Saleen after Tune

I just installed a saleen SC. I am having some annoying issues. I get a stumble when stomping on the gas around 2000 RPM. When driving normal, the car stumbles, sputters, and sometimes backfires between 2000 and 2500 RPM. Am I running to rich? I did get a dyno tune, but have to have my tuner look at it again. Another issue I'm having is the car when starting cold, won't start unless I floor the gas pedal. I put the stock plugs back in the car to try and eliminate a spark issue; the car calmed down alot. I got rid of the Brisk plugs and ordered ford racing plugs, will be installed tomorrow. From what I understand, the Brisk plugs, which I had installed, are delicate. I'll keep you posted as to how I make out. Another thing that was suggested to me was I may have a vacuum leak. That said, I am going to take my catch can out and see if that helps. Forgot to mention, The car sometime doesn't hold its idle. Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks,
Chris

It sounds like you have a general idea of what your looking for.....

1. Plugs
2. Vaccum Leak
3. Tune

Start there...

Plugs will be changed tomorrow. And all the vacuum lines are going to be rechecked. I've been at this for the last 2 weeks, i hope to get it resolved soon.

Please check the "gap" on the new plugs which should be between .032" and .028" depending on how much boost you are running...

I split the difference and gapped me plug to .030"...

Next have the person that wrote your tune know what is happening and they may be able to rewrite a tune for you that runs better...

From your analysis, I think your fuel is too rich and choking the motor at low RPMs... Thgis can be fixed by the tune...

Do you have any additional fuel system upgrades???

If so, check that too...

I had my Saleen Supercharger installed by a Ford Dealership and they loaded the Saleen tune into my car. The result was that my car ran crappy so I called JDM for a tune via e0mail. Loaded it and all my problems were solved...

Good Luck, Dave

Clean your MAF as well and check the TB to see if it needs cleaned while your at it.
That is definitely on the agenda. How do you clean the MAF? Aren't they pretty delicate.

I am going ti gap the new plugs at .030. My tuner won't be back in town until next week. Can't wait till he gets back. The car is running horrible and it is bothering me terribly.

Thanks for the replies. I'll let you know how I make out.

Plug gap won't change anything, leave them as they are.

Keep the current ones until you get the issue resolved, avoid the chance of ruining them.

Just to know, what injectors are you using, 60s perhaps?

Lito,

Good point. I was thinking the same thing about the plugs. I did install the new plugs which cleaned the RPMs up quite a bit. I'm going to take them back out in a few. I am using 39# injectors. Should I go with something different?

buy maf cleaner at advanced or similar store to clean the maf..

Tyler,

I'm off to buy the cleaner. Thanks.

Well I checked and cleaned the Throttle body. It wasn't all that bad. It had a little black film around where the butterflies close, and some build up of the blow back from the crank case. The MAF looked okay. As stated above, I changed the spark plugs which 98% cleaned up the issue I was having.

This leads me to believe the car is definitely running rich causing my plugs to fail.

Am I on the right track?

Thanks again for the help,
Chris

I think this is totally in the tune. Also looking at your sig I see you have the 3.2 pulley. That is 12-12.5 lbs of boost not 7. If your seeing 7 on that pulley something is definately not right.

No 39s are good to go, I asked just to discard an issue with 60s data on some cars.

Update: Installed the FRPP plugs. The car still is acting up. Does my issue sound like it could be spark blow out?

I stand corrected. I have a 3.4 pully.

No.

My buddy with a Saleen has this happen every once in a while. It's always metered air getting out, which means his intake is loose and letting air out. Double check the intake and make sure it snug, along with all the other vacuum lines.

How did you resolve your issue?

Did you ever get this issue resolved?

Hey guys. I did get the issue resolved in the begining of this week. Just didn't have the chance to post the results.

Met with my tuner on Monday. He took out 25 degrees of timing between 2000 and 2500 RPMs. The problem was the variable cam timing, and the Hot Rod cams. I am going to switch to the comp stage 2 blower grind cams. This should yield more HP and smoother exceleration. The Hotrods are fine but, the comp cams are more efficient.
