Are Comp SPR cams really worth extra cost over NSR's?

My dad is going to have Comp cams and Kook's LT's installed on his GT/CS soon. My dad and I wanted to get the Comp SPR Stage 1 cams(127400), but the shop the cams will be installed at recommended the Comp NSR cams(127200) because they do not require valvetrain modifications; another reason they mentioned is that it will cost a lot more to install the SPR's.

The NSR's cost $650-$700, while the SPR's with springs, retainers, and phaser limiters cost $1200-$1300 depending on where you buy them. Then there's the additional labor to put in the new valvetrain to sustain the higher lift of the SPR's which would add at least another $500. If I'm correct about the additional labor costs, that is a total of over $1000 more spent to have the SPR's.

Taking this into consideration, are Comp SPR cams really worth forking out the extra dough for? For a little perspective, my dad's car is not taken to the dragstrip very often at all, it has 3:73 gears, and I don't know if he ever plans to purchase ported heads.

Current performance mods are C&L 95MM Racer CAI, FRPP 3:73's, 93 octane tune, CMDP's, and UDP's.

I have the nsr cams and I love them. I know it doesnt help.
But im curious too about the spr being better .l

I would guess that the 127400's over the 127200's would be 10-15whp. The 127400's with you Dad's mods, might be worth a tenth of a second at the track.

That being said, if your Dad is looking for a lumpy idle, then he needs to go with the 127400's. The 127200's will have a stock idle.

No it helps because the NSR's are one of the cams he might be getting. :thumb:

Ok, I'll let him know that later, thanks. His car dynoed at 301rwhp in 2008 in warm weather with the bolt ons I listed above so I'm thinking it should get about 335rwhp with the 127200's/Kooks LT's, and about 345rwhp with the 127400's/Kooks LT's.

I was interested in 127500's also, but decided with the 3:73 gears, 127400's would be better because low end loss is less and Comp Cams states stock gears are OK with them.

the extra lift isn't really worth anything with stock heads. look at the flow numbers from .400 to .500 lift, its like 5 cfm difference. The extra duration will be worth a couple hp but not much. I would say its not worth the extra gain.

Looks like NSR's are the right cam for our car, thanks guys. I'm hoping the shop will do before/after dyno runs to see what it gains from the cams/longtubes.

I will simply say this. Every time I've done cams I always wished I had gone a with a little more. Having a naturally aspirated motor that keeps pulling the higher it goes is intoxicating. Also, you did not mention if the car is an auto or manual. If it a manual I would say definitely go with the SPR cams as you have a lot more latitude with a manual. If it's an auto and you don't plan on getting into the trans and converter you'll lose too much on the bottom end with SPRs, so in that case go with NSRs.

Since your dad is going to be paying to have them installed, go with nsr's. If you were doing the install, I would go with spr cams.

That's a good way of looking at it. I would be up to helping him install cams but he decided he rather have an experienced mechanic do the work. I don't blame him since I wouldn't want to risk accidentally dropping a valve, mess up the timing, etc either unless I knew pretty well how to work on these cars.



Vxer, thanks for pointing that out, it's a manual.
