Ticking when start up

Hey guys, my car has been acting up lately, When I go to drive it in the morning sometimes it has a ticking sounds coming from the engine and other times it does, but today it got really loud and was even ticking as i was driving. I honestly have absolutly no idea what it is or what it could be.

My mods are JLT intake and SCT custom tune from BBR, the idle is set a little higher though at around 870 or so, i must get that fixed, its because had a great deal or surging even after letting car idle for 10 minutes then with ac for another 10 minutes.

My Tickin' Story...

Mine ticked when new. I was told it was normal by two techs from two dealerships, one being from where I bought it. Also was told not to change the oil, so, knowing it was all BS I changed the oil using the Ford filter and oil blend. The tick went away in one day. Since this car sat for months in a garage before I bought it, this would be a possible reason. The car ticked for a minute or two after it sat for two weeks...so I would not be surprised if it's an oiling issue. That said, car runs good.

Now I have a slight rattle as the rpm's drop from the initial cold start of 1,400 rpm's or so into it's initial operating temperature. It sits there with what I would refer to as a misfire...I guess the 02 sensors can't send a clear message to the computer until it's fully warmed up?

Just because a car is new does not mean that it had the right amount of oil installed from the factory.

True...However, a low oil reading in a new car would have been a first for me...I checked everything before driving away. They even had all 4 @ 32 psi.

My tick was like a Morse code (as someone in another forum described it)...Tick...tick.......tick tick...............tick.

Factory first, then dealer PDI. I guess it could happen. These engines have a low oil warning that pops up on the message center, though.

They can't, they are in what is called open loop mode. Basically the car is running on a default setting until the temp is in operating range when they go into closed loop. This is part of the reason anytime you start an engine you should let it get to operating temp before shutting it down

They go into open loop mode within a few seconds . . . literally. They don't wait until full operating temperature.

I just noticed a slight ticking coming from my car when I pulled it in the garage. It wasn't continual like bad lifters or valves would be; it was kind of random. There'd be a couple of ticks, then nothing for a few seconds, then a couple more ticks, then nothing...

WTF?

Oil level is completely full. Any ideas what that could be? Is it the Ti-VCT or something, or should I take it into the dealer?

^ thats exactly how mine is, im worried about it and then again i really have no idea on what it could be and i figured a dealer will just be like its completely normal and tell me to move on.

That's why I took it in right away, so there is record of it. It does not matter if they send you home ticking away...if something does happen you've got proof. The Ford rep in my area knows about my tick. She was very nice, gave me her direct line, was reassuring etc...I'm not worried at all.

Are you guys using the Ford synthetic oil blend and Ford filter? Safe way to go...

Also, I never heard my tick while driving, it was way too faint.

It would be very educational, certainly for me, if a tuner/engine builder would come on here and tell us what's up.

The tick on my motor is freaking loud now. It sounds like bad valvetrain noise, but the noise is more noticable from underneath the car. It's also a lot louder when the A/C is on.

I took it to the dealer and three separate people there heard it. I made an appointment for tomorrow morning for it to get looked at.

Mine ticks since the day I bought it. It got much much much worse when I changed the oil, I can clearly hear it when going through gears 1-4 in the low RPM range.

Mine ticked since like 500 miles. When I changed the oil at about 1500 miles it was 2 quarts low. Not sure were the oil went but it went someplace since it showed full when i bought it

Mine ticks too, Im not really worried about it for the same reason Im not worried about the occasional idle droop, its not youre typical engine.

Mine ticked after the first oil change (1200 miles), and it was LOUD, sounded like a valvetrain noise and it was pretty random. That just went away on its own after 1000 miles or so, I have 6000 miles now and havent heard it at all.

I also had the knocking sound coming from what sounded like the bellhousing area behind the RR head since it was new. It sounded like a main bearing knock, temp didnt matter, you could feel it if you held you hand on the RH valve cover. Dealer said 'normal' its the AC belt, there is no tensioner on the AC belt on these and supposedly thats making the noise. I called BS on that one until a day before I put the blower on. I made sure it was knocking, shut it off, took out a knife, cut the AC belt off and it was gone. The Roush blower drive adds a tensioner to the AC compressor and I have never heard it again so I ASSume Ford was right.

Those are my engine noise stories, both of them made me uneasy about putting the blower on since my powertrain warranty would be gone.

Mine also has a loud tick when starting up and if I am driving next to something at low rpm I can hear it ticking softly while i'm driving. I'm not too worried about it though, if something happens Ford fixes it. But I'm sure if it was a serious problem something would have been figured out my now and there would be more complaints.

Hopefully its normal valve train (vct) noise or maybe injectors?? But I hope its nothing along the lines of the LS1 and their "piston slap" debacle .
