So when you hit the rev limiter in the mustang the tach lights up bright red, very noticeable.

I have not done any real investigating, but I THINK that the light is directly connected to the computer via the rev limiter, so if you change the limiter to a higher value via a tune the light should come on at a higher value.

IF that is the case, I was going to try and simply get behind the cluster and find the wire(s) that send the signal to the tach to turn it red.

I was thinking there has to be some way to rig up a shift light to those wires so that the shift light commands the tach to turn red at whatever RPM is desired (It may come on again if the rev limiter is hit, but that doesn't really matter to me).

Has anyone thought about/attempted this?

Alternatively, if you can simply adjust the function of that light within a tune you could just have it come on at whatever RPM you want if it is an independent command free of the actual rev limiter.

Thoughts? (And don't say use a raptor shift light, I think that's an obvious and easy solution, trying to be a little creative here :)

I didn't care for the 7300RPM rev limiter set in my tune. The cluster would flash red at 7300rpm when it used to at 7000. I've set my rev limiter back to 7000 and that's when the cluster flashes. So the tune, I believe, will affect the flashing depending on what RPM you set.

Well if that's the case then I guess you'd have to rig it up yourself to a shift light through wiring behind the cluster to get the tach to flash red at a desired RPM (which would obviously be lower than the rev limiter).

I'll see what I can come up with, I think it would be pretty cool to be able to utilize that function as a shift light.

I don't get that cool feature with my base GT.

Are you sure? It's not really a shift light - it's a feature of the gauges. Whenever any of them get to the "approved" limit (high or low, depending on which gauge), they turn red. The gas gauge will turn red when you have about 6 miles left on the tank. The tach turns red when you hit the rev limit (really can't notice it during the day so it may be a matter if the headlights are on or not).

Non-premiums don't have white face gauges.

My stock automatic gives me the red tach going to 2nd and 3rd at wot. I don't think it's normal but I like it.
