Well, I'm about to eat it big time. My oldest son is just about drivers age and will need to be put on the policy next year. Only good thing is he will have completed his drivers ed course but can only drive on a restrictive license till he is 17 due to a recent law change here in LA and he maintains a solid A average so far in school. From what I understand since I own the Stang and primary driver it doesn't matter if he drives an old beater car the rate increase will be large. Also, it doesn't help living around the New Orleans area that has one of the highest rates in the country due to it's great highways and supperb and well behaved motorist.

Any parents out there have any experience with this Insurance rate increase delima?

Either strong arm the agent into writing the policy stating the kid won't be allowed to drive the Mustang or put him in a beater on his own policy.

My ex wife had a son that was driving. My insurance company wrote him on a specific vehicle and he was excluded from driving the 2 mustangs we had at the time. That saved us alot of money!!

I'm on a similar policy. Four vehicles (one's basically a glorified golf cart...it's called a Gem car) and three drivers in the family. That way, the I don't get raped on insurance. I'm 17, by the way.

Insurance is $800 a year and I pay most of it. All things considered, I don't think it's too bad. Hopefully my good grade discount kicks in soon.

Seriously, putting the kid on his own policy has it's ups and downs. On the up side, your rates don't go up. On the down side, he will get an outrageous rate, and if you're footing the bill anyway... well, I'm not sayin... I'm just sayin.

I was 18 when I got my license... parents held me back on that one, due to... well... rebelious behaivior :D. Anyways, at 18 I had my own policy. This is back in 2002. I paid $180/month for state minimum required liability only, on a '96 Ford Thunderbird 3.8L V6. Tell ya what, outrageous doesn't even cover it.

And yes, I did the M-90 blower swap from a '95 T-Bird S/C. Nightmare. Wasn't worth it. Blew the heads right off the block. I was 19 at the time. I didn't know you had to tune for that shit!! LOL

well i'm 20 and bought my mustang when i was 19. my parents had me on their insurance and still do i foot the bill for it. when i started driving my parents cars didn't go up and i had an old 97tbird with just liability as that was all i could afford at the time. when i got my mustang my insurance went up by about 1800 bucks. i was only paying like 200(liability) a year and now pay 2,000 (for full coverage)a year. i don't think your car rates will go up if he isn't insured to drive your car.

the crappy part is i've taken defensive driving classes due to my job and have a commercial drivers license and i still don't even get a discount.

My dad had me pay my share of the insurance bill when I was a kid. It did me good. Taught me there was no free lunch in life.

OP, dont let the kid drive the stang, talk with your agent.

insurance sucks for young males, either have an exclusion policy like others said, or put him on his own policy on a beater. also ask for a good grade discount, also might look in to getting some defensive driving for him here in Germany ADAC offers them and while they are expensive(~300-900euros!) they will save that much in lower insurance in just a year or two, I wonder if NASA(the racing group not space group) or other groups in the states offer that sort of thing.

I paid $50 a month for liability insurance on my 96 Eagle Talon TSi when I was on my parents policy, had a terrible accident which totalled my Talon, bought a 96 Explorer XLT 4x4, still cost only $50 a month. Then I went to my own policy because the insurance company told me I had to be off of their policy, yep after one accident I was booted. So I paid $150 for liability only for my truck by myself, now with full coverage on my 06 GT and liability on my truck i pay $240 a month.

I never will forget turning 25 and my rates dropping like a rock, of course that was nearly 25 years ago! I had my own policy on a beater.

Like the movie states, "I'm older and I got more insurance!"

I am 20 and my insurance is 340/month. But I lost my discounts and I have an accident on my record. I have four mustangs so far and they have all been insurance crazy.

I'm not entirely sure what our family insurance totals come to here, I know it's not too bad with me and my 18 year old brother on it but I thought I'd give ya some info on what rego/insurance was worth for me in Australia and it might give ya a point of comparison.. lol.

For my 1980 Escort, 1.6, slow as fuck.
Rego, per year, was just under $700.
Insurance, all I had covered was third party, fire and theft came to $420 a year which wasn't too bad.

If in Australia, or Brisbane at least, regardless of age, if you own something like a Toyota Supra you'll be looking at upwards of $3.5k a year just on insurance and like $800-900 on registration.
