Some people originally thought it was an extension spring (pull) but it's not. It's a compression spring (push)
Therefore, that spring, as it sits in the assembly bracket, is squished down, and when you push the pedal it assists you in pushing the pedal down. Problem is, when our clutch gets spinning at high RPMs, it's centrifugal force combined with the added spring weight pushing it down keeps the pedal pinned down.
By removing the big assist spring and leaving the upper shaft spring (GT500 type) you allow the pedal to return on it's own even at high centrifugal/RPM force.
