Ive had the 4.10s insalled for about a month now and since the install the gears have a slight noise to them kind of like a metallic sound like bearings turning. Is this gear whine and is it normal? I had one of our best local shops do it.

No it is not normal. a "whine" is from improper setup. A metalic sound could be caused by a couple things. You should take it back to them and have it checked and corrected.

It could be a bearing issue. Gear whine has a pattern to it, like during coast or accel. Is there any kind of pattern to the noise?

There are two kinds I believe. One is motive, and those apparently aren't good and whine alot.

I used to have the box but sold my stock gears in it or I could have looked at the part number. Im going to talk to them tomorrow and see if I can leave it Wed. and see what they say.

I had new ford racing 4:10's installed by a well known local mustang shop. These had the chrome or polished finish. I forgot the official name of the coating on them. Had a master rebuild kit installed at the same time...used ford friction modifyer and royal purple fluid. These had a whine that sounded like the motor noise you used to get through your car stereo back in the day. Also on accel and decel. Took it back a week later. Everything checked out normal..backlash rechecked. Still in perfect specs, no wear marks. Even chalked up the teeth and spun it. Still perfect. Filled it back up with fluid and went on my way. I just added a couple clicks to the stereo volume. The installer had no experience with the gears with that special coating. Could have had something to do with it.

Gear whine does not necessarily indicate a bad install. Many of the companies cut them different which can produce a whine that is within spec and perfectly normal. My 4.10 "FRPP A" gears developed a whine. I had them installed by Fastlane Motorsports (very reputable shop) and they know what they are doing. I then had them checked by two other reputable shops due to my concerns and both times they checked out within spec. Sometimes these gears just flat out make a noise and that's all there is to it. The higher numerically you go the more noise you will get. Control arms tend to enhance the noise as well. Pay close attention to the noise over time and if it gets worse/louder then that is an indicator of excessive wear and is a problem that you should have checked.

I have Ford Racing 4.10s, and I made sure they are not motive gears. Mine do not whine a bit, but from what I've read around the Net I appear to have gotten lucky.

My Motive 4.10s whine on coast only and same here it was checked and rechecked. The guy that did my install actually told me since he couldn't get the whine out if I bought different gears he would install them for free. It's been a few years now and I just got use to being there

My FMS branded (read:motive) 4.10's whine on accel. I've had them out 2x and re-shimmed the pinion but I cannot get this set right. I've had no problems with FMS 3.73's and 3.55's, Richmond 3.73`s, and a set of junkyard 4.10's out of an explorer, but this set just won't shut up.
This still might be my fault as I do not use the proper pinion depth setting tool...My technique hasn`t failed me before but perhaps this is the reason why the tool exists...

Just a thought on the "pinion depth tool"..After setting pinion depth the gears must be pattern checked, if the pattern is not correct what do you do? That's right change the pinion shim..LOL I have done tons of gears, I use the Master Housing Dimension method (on 8.8's) which gets you close, check pattern and adjust as required.

Bottom line is, Yes, sometimes it's just the gears

I've learned that the faster you want to go the more sacrifice your going to make in the NVH department. Just the nature of the beast.

That's my method too, first time it's failed me.
