I see your point as well as 19Cobras point, neither is wrong in my opinion, have personally seen it both ways. Sometimes you can save a bad install sometimes you can't. Sometimes (rarely I admit) it's just a stubborn set of gears. Just think it's good to see others opinions and real world experience.

You can continue your pissing match on your own now, im not gonna argue in this guys thread anymore.
Seemed more like a discussion based on each others experience more than a pissing match...I always like to see what other people's experiences are.......
. There are a lot of gear installers out there who blame whine on a bad gear set simply because they don't want to admit they just didn't set them up correctly. Gear sets are pretty robust. .
I'm sorry you feel that's what this was about. There's a lot of bad information out there on gear installs and through this discussion I think we could help inform people of their options, and what's really causing their gear related problems. There are a lot of gear installers out there who blame whine on a bad gear set simply because they don't want to admit they just didn't set them up correctly. Gear sets are pretty robust. Almost regardless of what they've previously been through, get that pattern to look right, and they're generally good to go. My customers are cheap, so I don't always have the luxury of working with brand new parts every time.
Thank you. A discussion, though of differing opinions, is still a discussion.
I agree. Any whine in my experience with gear installs has either been from a bad pinion bearing or from the pinion nut not being cinched down enough
Amen!! I have see a lot of people just hit the pinion nut with an impact till all the slack is taken out or they try to set it by feel and end up getting it too tight. One thing I run into quite often is too tight of a pinion bearing preload get mistaken for a howling gears.
Yep, I have had one install out of the 100 or so that I have done that whined. It was because I did not tighten the pinion nut down enough and after a few days of driving the pinion developed some slight movement which threw the backlash off. Tighten the nut, no more noise.
In regards to Motive gears, I have only setup two (one Ford, one Chevy)with this brand and my customers experienced no noise problems. So I don't know if that 'rumor' has validity or not.
And I will go ahead and admit, I am install by feel guy. I have not used any gauges since my first 2-3 gear installs 13 years ago. But, I worked with gear setups in my job (airline industry)for many years before moving up in the company. So dealing with that type of stuff everyday, you learn what proper gear meshing feels like..LOL..I have had one or two customers who watched me setup gears in the past and although they were having no problems go back and check the backlash a few days later because it bothered them. Each time it was dead on .009-.010 backlash as it should be.
slight whine on decel between 50mph to 40mph besides that nothing with my frpp 4.10's
