I would think heads and cams combo would help further predict that.

for the sake of argument... Shadowlands pnp, custom cams (spr stage 3ish)

Well for starters the heads blow away the old ones!

...c'mo... really...

what do you concider 'blow away'... curious minds want to know...

there has to be one or two out there...

I think that you could build that 4.6L 302 Stroker with that head and cam combo to perform the 5.0 or at least run with it.

Considering what the 5.0's are putting out with just bolt ons, I don't see the 3 valve competing. Once there are some companies putting out ported heads and there are some cam choices, I think the 5.0 will be the way to go without a doubt. By time you get a 3v to compete it won't be very street friendly. This is just my opinion from what I have seen on the new engine but time will tell.

ported heads for 4v will NOT be $/hp friendly... and cams, same ...

There is a majority here that swear that pnp heads and cams on 3v arent worth the $ to hp... for 4v's, it will be 200% price for what Id guess be around 50% more power vs. 3v's...

No doubt it will be expensive but by time you build that 11:1 4.6 based 302, you will be talking quite a bit of money.

Then you have to add on the cost of the shadowlands pnp heads and cams. Either way you go, n/a with either motor is high $$$ and not cost effective. Hopefully Matt will make the switch next summer and we will have a true comparison on the track rather than bench racing.

You know what I'm saying and I have read and reread Matt's build threads so I know enough.

I think a big bore 4.6 with correctly ported heads and cams and the same 11 to 1 compression, will run with the 5.0, I've raced 3 new 5.0's at the strip, 2 stock, I out ET'd and MPH'd them no problem, the 3rd one had CAI, cat back and a tune, I out ran him, but he had me by 2 mph in the 1/4, now if I had the extra 1.5 points of compression, (yes 1.5, my heads combustion chambers are opened up) and the extra cubes, it would take a lot of bolt-ons on a 2011 5.0 to keep up.
now with that said, if I was buying a new Mustang and I had my choice, I'd have the new 5.0......

Well the 5.0 heads outflow the 5.4 4V heads which flow about 330 cfm at .500 lift and 28 inches of H20. A lot of the Stage 3 heads that are out there flow between 280 and 295 cfm

So for max power high rpm N/A builds or FI builds the stock out of the box Coyote heads flow better. But as far as power underneath the curve I bet you can get a set of 3V heads to kick in the teeth of the Coyote heads depending on cams and cam timing.

But damn the 5.0 heads come with DI bosses already drilled, and with TiVCT the ability to alter cam timing and vary the DCR is amazing. A high compression DI build or E85 build would be nasty with that head flow!
