Well, then do it in 1st, but roll out of the burnout on the throttle and let out of it. I'm sure you know what you are doing and get the jest of what I'm trying to convey. I'd let the trans shift itself down the track.

i understand what your saying.i do my burnouts in first gear and when is time to roll forward i actually bring my rpms down to 4k then let it roll while playing with the gas pedal.i too let the tranny shift going down the track.lol
i was just curios to know if there was a different way to cause less strain on the tranny.another thing too that i see alot of people doing is putting it in first bring the rpms up to about 5k and then shift to second and do the burnout in second.i try that once but i fealt like if im killing the tranny with that shift at high rpms.

You're on the right track and based on the fact that you are not FI, it could damage the trans during a shift outside of the waterbox and this doesn't universally apply, I'm going to edit my previous post.

Fitst (1)- Other than the fact that I wouldn't want to use additional pump capacity to supply a static band that I don't need; I don't see any issue other than it requires the trans to simultaneously perform more functions and couples the driveline. The 1-2 shift if left in drive could possibly damage the transmission, not to mention (see page 2) the fact that most N/A cars can't power stickies in a 2nd gear burnout.

Are you saying to manually shift the trans when racing....I don't really understand what you're saying. When doing my burnout I start in 1st and then manually shift to 2nd and let it go for 4-5 seconds, til I get good smoke. Is that wrong??

No, it is not, at all. Personally, in the waterbox I would keep it in "D" and let it shift on its own. Since it doesn't apply to everyone and there are really no adverse effects from leaving it in first, heating the tires and not shifting at all, that was what I listed as the safest option. I don't manually shift these down the track. With a proper tune and setup you shouldn't have to, just hit the go pedal and hang on.

This is why I listed leaving it in first as the safest option. I originally had it listed to shift on its own, but this comment made me change my mind. The Forward clutch and Low/Reverse band apply and that's it. The shift to second only applies the Overdrive band and I don't see that as a problem.

I generally turn the tires over in the water box then roll out a few feet and get them spinning and shift to 2nd, there is not much load on it until I roll forward from doing my burnout which I have let off and let everything come to a stop on their own.
