Painted my shifter bezel (chipped/peeling) and cleaned up a spill today which entailed removing console and shifter lever. Hung up due to button not working and lever not wanting to lock in Park. First issue is the long plastic pin w/ spring in the handle isn't reaching/locking into the metal cylinder at the bottom (which is laying there). Am I missing something obvious or is it time to buy a new one? All connectors were reattached and the prob exists with or without the black sliding cover. Thanks!

Close up of linkage, hard to say but I don't see your release linkage, should be a slide coming off the solenoid and a metal block above the slide.

See if your micro switch is sitting properly in the plastic guide when in a gear, this may tell you if your linkage is off.

If your linkage is off, you probably didn't set the spline linkage properly, it sits here and you can loosen and move teeth till the linkage matches the selected gear. If your off you may be jammin the linkage cause your throw is off and the shifter cannot reach the hole for the pin to drop. Just taking a guess hope this helps, I would check that brake release I don't see the brake release lever but I'm not sure orientation need a little less zoom on your pic so to see a little more.

Thanks for your reply. Micro switch looked fine-a little rough when moving through the guide (needs lube). I never fully removed the shifter to adjust/set the slide linkage. All I did was remove the lever then try to reinstall it and that's when the Prob arose. That tells me the Prob lies somewhere there.

When I press the button the bottom of the pin hits the side of the metal cylinder instead of entering it. I have to move the cylinder over and up with a screwdriver to get it to engage but I'm not sure how that cylinder accomplishes anything since it just lays there unconnected to any other part.

I'll pull the console again this weekend to take another stab. I have no prob upgrading to the deluxe shifter over this base (all black) if need be.

When you pull the console, get a close up that cylinder your having issues with. I still have my original shifter on the shelf I could compare too and see what's missing.

If your going aftermarket, get the TCI Ratchet Shifter. Hands down the best interior upgrade in my car and is truly functioning ratchet shifter, Metal and Leather no more plastic.

Ok I think I see whats going on, here is a pic of mine in the same position as your pick, that metal block you see in my pic is connected to the pin, so when you push the button it lifts up that metal block and you can move position. When you go to park that block will push the brake lock solenoid forward and fall into place. I think your block dropped down someplace and you need to connect the pin to the block. Also don't forget to connect that wire for the OD.

I think you are correct. I'll look for that block and report back. Not even sure it's repairable if I locate it. As for the TCI, I have no desire to manually shift the car and I actually like the stock piece. I appreciate all of you help.

Good luck the block is about 2-1/2" x 1-1/2" x 1/4" it's pretty good size, hope you find that laying around and you can put back together. The TCI isn't a manual only shifter, it works exactly like your stock "but better". If you can't fix that one you have and really like the stock, PM me, I have my original stock one I can send you pics if you really decide go that way and purchase a used unit.
