Hey guys,

As the title states my dad bought a 2010 F-150 with a 4.6 3V a month or so after he bought it the motor started making a noise. He stopped driving it immediately and we ordered a timing chain kit and phasers because he thought the phasers were the issue. Upon tearing the engine down this weekend he thinks the previous owner or the place he bought it had an oil pump go out because there is marring on the cams.

If anyone has more insight on the engine let me know. As it sits now he is thinking he will have to get a new motor, because if the cams are marred the bearings will be worse.

Thanks in advance,

Jason

Will get pictures as soon as he gets them too me. He said all of the issues started when he changed oil. He thinks they put in thicker oil to mask the issue.

In 1987 I bought a 1984 F150 for $5000. A really nice truck with a 302 and C6 auto. It ran great until I changed the oil, then no oil pressure and knocking. Had the engine rebuilt (with money I didn't have, I was 22 years old) and it ran great. Three months later the transmission went out. I had it rebuilt (again, with money I didn't have) and was so pissed about the deal that three months later I traded it in on a new truck. I got $2300 on trade (my loan payoff).

To this day I'm scared shitless about buying used vehicles without knowing their history. I've learned a lot but still hate the thought of getting shafted like that again.

Ya, I definitely understand that. My dad is actually a mechanic, but hasn't done too much in depth work on these modular engines. It had a small leak on the timing cover, but thought it was just a crack that they siliconed up. He bought this truck because his last truck was starting to nickel and dime him. I feel really bad for him, and just wanted to see if anyone had any insight or anything that we were overlooking.

Also if anyone knows a good place to buy a remanufactured engine let me know.

Maybe it's because I'm on my phone, but all I see is where the followers contact the cam lobe. It's been a while, but I'm pretty sure the cams looked like that in our 06 the last time I had the covers off.

Edit: Just looked at the pic I took of my 4V because I pulled the valve cover off today and it has the same marks. And I know my engine is healthy.

Ya, I thought the same thing too when I looked at pictures from the last time I had my valve covers off. He sent me this picture and said that there is actually grooves outside the normal wear marks. It is deeper than it looks. It also doesn't help that my dad isn't the best with taking pictures on his phone haha.
