Anyone Using a Schroth (Rallye) Harness for AutoX?

Hey all, fairly new at the mustang game still. Getting ready for my 4th autocross event. Had my front Koni's and proper alignment done for the last one and wow what a difference. I do feel that now I need a harness to go along with the Recaros. Just autocross specific, the car will never see a track day and I'll be using the factory belt over the road. There is one other person with a s197 in our club runs with a hand-me-down harness rigged up to the lower child seat brackets, with short lengths of chain running to the snaps. It works, but I'm looking for something a little cleaner.

I've been looking around at my options, and I think a Ralley 3 or 4 is my best bet, but I honestly have no idea where or how I should be rigging it. I'd love to have one end redone with a buckle so that I don't have to fool with any alert/chime disabling. I'd also like to be able to completely de-rig at least the driver and passenger seat portion, the rear ties could lay there, just stuff them in the seat. I am not sure whether the center buckle will fit through the hole on my recaros though. If I have to just leave them wrapped around the seat I guess that'd be ok, because race car, but I'd definitely be getting black.

4. Not looking hodge-podged

...oh and I know about the CG lock.

It's not a harness, but it's a lap belt that will keep your butt planted but allow for some upper body freedom.

Otherwise I do know of a couple people who use the Rallye 3 and 4 but they never remove theirs. They simply push them around the outside of the seat when not in use or daily drive with them since they are DOT approved. I would NOT bolt them to the child supports but the rear seat belt anchors under the seats or in the case of the Rallye3 you might get away with the upper seat belt anchor (not sure how it would work with the arms off at an angle).

I have the rallye-3s and love them. I went with the rallye-3s because of the better angle
You can get for the shoulder straps. I mounted the tail strap to the rear upper seatbelt bolt. I can post some pics if you'd like.

Sholzer, yes! Thanks for responding, our cars are twins. Can you please pm/post/email some pictures of how it was installed! Thanks man, I'll be ordering the ralley 3 soon it looks like.

I thought I had some more pictures on my facebook, but I just have this one from right after I installed it before I put the rest of the interior back in.

I can take some more tonight after I get off work. Install was pretty straight forward. The only thing I would do differently is modify/widen the opening that the seat belt comes out of. With both the harness belt and regular seat belt coming out of the same hole, the regular seatbelt doesn't like to retract by itself. Not a huge problem since no one ever sits back there, but it looks sloppy just sitting there loose. The two lap belts were easy to install to the lower seat belt bolts. For the inside bolts, you'll need to remove the seats. When taking the seats out, you'll need to disconnect the airbags. Make sure you disconnect the battery first or you'll get an airbag code that will not go away until you take it to a dealer (I took mine to get it reset and just played dumb. They didn't even ask about the harnesses lol)

If you would get a few, particularly of the tailstrap mounting that'd be great. What have you done about the seatbelt light? Just disable the chime and deal with the light? Think I might try to go find a spare buckle at a junkyard and just shove it in, or does it sense it from the reel?

I only use the harness for autox. I wrap them around the back of the seats and buckle them

Does it snug up ok being that far off-center? I would think things would pull sideways and at best be uncomfortable & at worst be somewhat unsafe.

I had been thinking of using the top child latch mount, or better just get the Corbeau bar, or MM bar. My car being a dual-use, I'd prefer to keep the rear seats somewhat accessible. Thus my quandary for now; so far I still suck badly enough that the stock belts are doing ok with the Recaros.

yea it's perfectly fine even though it's not straight back, it's where the instructions tell you to put it as a matter of fact.

I would not use the child latch mounts though as I believe they're just anchored in that lightweight piece on the rear deck rather than the chassis like the seat belt mount.

Looking at the pic again, the angle looks a lot more exaggerated than it actually is too. I'll get a pic from straight on through the rear window to give you all a better idea of what it looks like.

Thanks. I'll end up hooking a typical 5-point harness in when I finally do it, but it's good to know the upper seatbelt mount will work. I won't attach to the lowers--too steep an angle for safety.

Thread resurrection!

Figured I'd follow-up. Finally got my Ralley-3 ordered and installed. Got it from HMS motorsport in Mass. As you said Shozler, the install was fairly straightforward, though it's worth noting that you have to entirely disassemble the rear interior to get at those rear seatbelt bolts. Fortunately, Ford designed everything so that it comes apart and goes back together without too much fuss. At least, relative to other cars. If you have a propensity for manhandling things then I would stay away from this project. The rear B/C pillar interior panel was a bit tricky to reinstall, and you have to be very careful to not damage the rear window defogger wire.

Maybe it's because it's a nearly new car, but I don't think I've ever had any interior pieces apart like this without breaking at least a few snaps and tabs. This all came apart and went back together quite nicely.

Oh, some other notes; the seatbelt bolts are a T-50 torx head, and make sure you identify the LEFT and RIGHT belts before you get too far into it, for the Ralley belts it matters because of the anti-submarining thingys on each belts. Put some masking tape on the areas that may look like they'll come in contact with one another during panel removal, they WILL scratch otherwise.

I'm glad I found this thread as I was wondering how others have installed harnesses on street cars.

My first question for those that have roll bars/harness bars, what are the harness guides on the bars for?

I see the tail section of the harness is bolted to the top rear seat belt, are the harness guides just there to position the harness inline with the shoulders? Or does the harness offer a wrap around the roll bar option?

Regarding the lap belts, are these just bolted in to the factory belt mounts?
You are basically stacking the stock belt and harness through the stock mounting bolt?

How do you like the harness? Do you feel you should have gone with a 5-point?
Under heavy braking, do you feel like you slip underneath or I guess they call it submarining?

On the picture you linked, the belts simply wrap around the cross bar--that's one of the reasons it is where it is. This is also why the Corbeau harness bar exists--to get this mounting option without the full roll bar.

Mine is only for autocross, if I was going to a track day I would use my factory stuff still. It's been discussed pretty clearly that the seat/harness thing is kind of an all or nothing deal when track days are in mind.

I can't really answer your other questions because I haven't brought the car out of storage yet and I don't plan to use the harness on the street, but yes the mounts are stacked.

Car is back on the road finally and this is what I ended up with:
