Is there a modification or kit to nicely "select shift" the 5R55S 5-speed automatic trans? It would be nice to have it perform and feel like the 6R80.

I'm not sure what you mean by "select shift" but I can put my tranny into whatever gear I want. Not sure why you can't.

Okay. Looking into this online did not find much. There is a TCI Ratchet Shifter that might work, some good and some not good reviews, and at over $750 it appears to be the only one out there. There is some talk out improving/changing the shift times via computer and some valve body changes (like an old school shift kit), but not what I am researching right now.
07 Boss = I did see your older posts from 2018 on this subject and I thank you for the info.

I don't think the tci shifter for the S197 is available anymore. But I did hear that you can get a one for a later model and just have to adjust the mounting points. But It's just rumor.

I had the TCI ratchet shifter in my 2010 auto with the 5R5SS. Gave me nothing but grief. It would lock up...and stuck in park. It fried my SJB. Ditto with a 2nd TCI unit. Went back to stock. Runs like a top.

I'm not a fanboy of tci especially their convertors, but I've never had an issue with mine. It's used to be used about 90% of the time driving but since have gotten shift points down pretty good in the tune.
