Hey everyone, I just recently bought an 05 GT with the 3v and I am experiencing some pretty frustering backfiring issue. It is backfiring pretty much any time I am accelerating which of course is causing terrible performance and hesitation. Does anyone have any ideas??? Note: previous owner said there was a tune done by "his people" so could have possible fucked something up. IDFK TBH.

thing I've already tried. New coils... New plugs... tested all the pigtails (they are good)... compression test (its good)... Cleaned the MAF...

Help would be very appreciated. THANK YOU!

Hi welcome!

Sounds like you have checked the easier part of the mechanical side. Do you happen to know or have the tuning device used to tune the car? SCT or HPT? Asking as a quick way to rule out the tune is to flash back to stock.

Welcome. You replaced plugs and coils. Ford parts or aftermarket parts? Are there any stored trouble codes? Even if there is no light on, scan the vehicle.

Check engine light on? Any codes stored? Fuel pressure? Did it run like this when you purchased it or a new development? What's the most recent work done?

The person i bought it from has no idea the tuning software and does not have device...He said that this issue started happening way after it was tuned. I double checked and he said he bought it tuned...

Hey everyone, thanks for the replies. I did a vacuum leak test with smoke and found that there was heavy smoke coming out the back of the imrc
Vacuum leak can definitely cause backfiring and misfires due to the lean condition.

Try and see where specifically the leak is coming from. It could be from the intake manifold gaskets or from the IMRC itself. If it’s the IMRC, it might be time to get CMDPs and a tune :)
